About the Author
Kevin D. Johnson, president of Johnson Media Inc. and a serial entrepreneur, has several years of experience leading his multimillion-dollar marketing and communications company that now serves many of the most notable Fortune 100 businesses. As an innovative leader, he has appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America, CBS, Oprah Radio, and in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. Moreover, he has appeared on CNN frequently.

Before founding his company in 2000, he engineered web applications and produced computer software for leading companies. He was a software programmer for IBM and a webmaster for CNN Interactive. He also worked for Arthur Andersen Worldwide as a business consultant and software developer.

Hailing from Boston, Massachusetts, Kevin attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, where he studied computer science as a NASA scholar and Spanish, graduating with honors. While in college, he started Johnson Media Inc., which in 2000 created one of the first online content management systems, called OmniPublisher. He later sold it to a publishing company, earning the distinction as a social media pioneer. Realizing the tremendous opportunity in applying Internet technologies to media and marketing, he decided to focus his business on this growing market.

Recently, Kevin was the director of economic gardening for the Technology Association of Georgia (TAG), one of the nation’s largest nonprofit trade organizations for technology. In this role, he was responsible for leading an innovative approach to economic development that focused on providing resources to high-tech businesses located in Georgia’s coastal region.

In his spare time, Kevin enjoys listening to salsa and jazz, playing piano in his Latin band, reading, golfing, traveling, and running half marathons. He is a member of the Apex Society, the Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC), and a former board member of the Atlanta Business League (ABL). He lives in Atlanta, Georgia, with his wife and son.

Author is too self-absorbed.

I have read hundreds, if not over one thousand business and self-help books; never seen an author so focused solely on himself and his accomplishments. I have read books by Trump where he is pompous, but one could easily argue Trump has fully earned it. I understand an author needs to build credibility with his/her audience, but an author must build credibility with facts and less about opinions. Directly comparing one of his college start-ups to Facebook, friends think I am a genius because I scored so high on the SAT, brilliant programmers like us, etc. Visited Harvard Business School, but just not for him, his time is just too valuable to waste on an MBA at Harvard. The self promotion was so great, it made it difficult to understand his points he was trying to convey. The author is convinced every business he ever started became best in class. I found the content to be informative and I liked how each chapter was a short factoid. Repeated same facts over and over too much as if each chapter was its own separate publication, we learned ten times that he attended Morehouse College. Many of the points were very valid, but author needs to find better ways to convey points than always his own experiences blown up with grandiose adjectives.

268 pages of the author stroking his own ego...

I can't believe this has maintained a 5 star rating, because I honestly found it quite difficult to get through the whole thing. I'm glad I read it though, because it showed me the kind of person and entrepreneur I do NOT want to become.

Kevin Johnson uses every page of this book to stroke his own overinflated ego, even saying at one point during his chapter on the necessity of being crazy that "maybe I am crazy - crazy rich, that is..." He talks about his soirees with Kanye West and President Obama and millionaire doctors on a private 18-hole golf course. This is all great and I understand that he's trying to show and illustrate what the entrepreneurial spirit can bring you, but for the love of god...the whole book was that kind of s***!

One particular chapter stands out to me as exhibit A to prove my point: In his chapter on spending time with people smarter than yourself, he starts with "The average person is intimidated by smart people. I know firsthand..." You might expect him to immediately go on to say he's spent time with people who humbled him in some form or fashion, but no, the next sentence is "whenever people find out what I scored on an SAT exam, they are shocked. Some try to stump me on the spot with a complex riddle or math question. Others just look at me in disbelief or with gut-wrenching jealousy. I can sense their fear of being judged." So yeah, he was referring to HIMSELF as the one people are intimidated by.

Throughout the book, he constantly compares himself to both Mark Zuckerberg and Steve Jobs. Quote: "As I watched my life play out on the big screen in the movie 'The Social Network,' I smiled, reminiscing about my college days when I, too, was an instant campus superstar like Mark Zuckerberg, cofounder of Facebook....Naturally, with my newfound fame came the groupies, the women who didn't necessarily have an interest in me as much as my ability to rub elbows with moguls like P. Diddy and Kanye West."

I can't necessarily say I regret reading the book, because some of the 100 points are actually useful - but I would have preferred to read it in a blog format with merely the list of 100 points, the quotes he adds underneath each chapter heading and that's it. I could do without Kevin Johnson's comments on how great he is and how everyone should aspire to be just like him. I find it ironic that he includes a chapter on entrepreneurs being humble (i.e. Mark Zuckerberg living a normal life despite being a billionaire), because he needs a dose of his own medicine.

His specialties include comparative political violence, Middle East/Islamic studies, political elites, multinational business and politics, U.S. foreign policy, the political economy of oil, and comparative ethnic politics. While the principles themselves are easy enough to learn, the everyday application can be more challenging. Often clients hit an emotional brick wall that sounds something like this: “Dr. T, I hear what you are saying about my spouse and what I need to do to be at peace with him, but I don’t like the idea that I’ll have to do what you suggest to get what I want.” To this I say, “Well, I don’t like that it hurts my foot when I drop a bowling ball on it. But gravity follows the laws of physics, and if I don’t understand that, don’t accept it, and don’t change my behavior because of what I know, I’ll get hurt over and over again.”

Certain laws govern human relationships too. I call those laws the Laws of Human Physics. If you understand these laws, you can use them to your advantage to gain peace with yourself and everyone you know. If you refuse to acknowledge and honor these simple but powerful principles, you will find yourself repeatedly hurt and frustrated and will not get the results you want in an elegant way. People who accept this principle eventually sigh and say, “Okay, so what exactly do I need to do again?” After that, we are off and running. Accepting “what is” has allowed my clients to stop wasting time and energy on impossible goals. This acceptance frees them up to use their time and energy to create what they want within the parameters of what is indeed possible.

When I was writing "The Ultimate Edge", I was serendipitously exposed to an elegant system of personality that, once utilized by my clients, significantly accelerated their growth and ability to manifest healthier, wealthier, and happier lives. I found myself surprisingly impressed by this personality typing system, known as the Enneagram. To be honest, at first I was tempted to dismiss the system since it emerged out of an ancient tradition rather than a modern, scientific one and because the name of the system sounded too “New-Agey Flake-cakey”. Thankfully, I kept an open mind.

Cairo Victorious, Cairo the Oppressor

Does anyone know the evolution of Egypt's eternal city better than Nezar AlSayyad? He has written books about Cairo before, "The Streets of Islamic Cairo" in the first flush of infatuation in 1981 and "Cities and Caliphs" in 1991 as his blind love ended. Now, we get AlSayyad's fond but clear-eyed expertise on his city when it is most needed to understand the revolution in process. The histories quickly move through Memphis, ancient Egypt and the Coptic Enclave to expand on the city of the Fatimids, Mamluks, Ottomans.

The final third of the book is devoted to the period from the 19th century to the dawn of the 21st century. The author skeptically or regretfully portrays the museumification of historic quarters that replace "craft-workers and small shops" with cafes and tourist-oriented facilities. Illegally constructed neighborhoods for migrants and poor residents became autonomous through government neglect, and were forced to develop their own social institutions and networks. "In the late 1980's and early 1990's, Islamist organizations began to establish roots there and the government's laissez-faire approach changed to one of hostility and repression, culminating in confrontations between residents and the state." At the opposite end of the economic scale, lavish shopping malls and gated luxury neighborhoods of leisure, consumption and residences such as Dreamland were developed.

The book is extensively illustrated with the author's clear maps and beautiful color photographs, augmented with historic illustrations including Jean-Leon Gerome's gorgeous painting "La Priere au Caire." The narrative is highly readable, making it the ideal resource for scholars and Arab Spring commentators but also for armchair travelers and readers discovering the fascination of Egyptian novelists.

Navigating the maze

AlSayyad facilitates understanding of Cairo's long history by focusing discussion of historical epochs on corresponding districts, edifices, and architecture. Treatment of the eventful medieval and early modern periods is especially rewarding. The whirlwind evolution of Cairo since I spent a year there during '83-'84 (when there were merely some 10 million inhabitants) has produced a place that, I'm sure, I would scarcely recognize. It is essentially an outline of Jobs’s blueprint for his commercial success. It consists of short, unnumbered chapters subtitled with quotations from Jobs applicable to the topic of each chapter. The author distilled lessons Jobs learned, concepts he initiated, and the business tactics he developed from a limited number of in-depth reference sources which he briefly mentions absent a bibliography. Each chapter, brings out something unique about Jobs, and is supported by a limited number of examples. If you want to bypass the long, heavily-detailed books written about Jobs, you might want to consider this book to grasp Jobs’ outlook of his business life quickly.

It's not magic or rocket science; it's food.

This isn't a diet book. It's a hysterical account of one man's journey on a diet. Penn is a great storyteller and has been a huge influence in my life. We've known each other for over 20 years and have some crazy friends. He tells lots of funny stories and Presto will keep you laughing.

The real message in Presto, his permanent lifestyle transformation, is in the book, but we likely won't hear it reported widely in the media or on blogs. Some ideas may indeed be very contrary to what the popular diet and exercise dogmas most often teach. Most reports will probably focus on potatoes and Penn explains the funny magic act behind this often maligned food.

We can watch as this unravels in the press. We can listen as the media and blog machines kick into high gear with the "paleos and vegans' debating as the "carb vs fat" arguments mound. Where does he get his protein? We'll hear experts tell us all about how wrong this is (ignoring his success) without first talking to his physicians. One doesn't get too crazy with the loud, formerly overweight talking half of one of the most successful Vegas shows without second, third, and fourth opinions, right? Of course he's done it and we see the results, but some were once critiquing his approach based on information found in a tabloid article. His response to that article will make you cry with laughter and perhaps enlightens us on how stories get twisted. Presto contains many bites of wisdom all plated with Penn's comedic genius.

Penn's transformation challenges status quo and suggests we can all make a change. Like much of his advice, Presto centers on breaking away from accepting mass mediocrity and instead seeking the best. Our struggles are real, but laughing at our mistakes brings us much closer to success than living a life driven by fear. We hear a lot of exaggerated claims about slowing metabolisms (the latest biggest loser distraction) and warnings against losing weight too quickly. Of course none of this will apply to the 196,000 people that had some form of bariatric surgery last year or the 703,000 in the 4 years prior.

These people can't eat Penn's diet now without difficulty and I'd really hope to inspire those considering this option to do something really crazy: change your lifestyle. For Penn, his train wreck in health was the license he needed to be crazy and REALLY do something this time, no matter what. While people very well be convinced by the inner chatter, friends, family, and conventional medical wisdom that they don't have the willpower or are metabolically broken; maybe that isn't true. Penn's success suggests we can make a lot more progress with laughter along the way.

It's not crazy to surgically rearrange someone's intestinal tract to limit their ability to swallow, but we are to lead to believe that it's crazy for me to tell Penn to voluntarily do the same thing. Okay, I'm a nut. My friend is doing great 17 months later, off 6 powerful BP meds and happy.

We do crazy things for friends, right?

Laced in the humor is a simple message - Change your lifestyle. Really. Change it. There's no need wait for the next new diet book or even reach for a potato. We probably won't hear this headline and that's actually what Penn did; he changed his relationship with food. Penn's success can be summed up in two sentences:

It's nearly impossible to lose weight with moderation and to keep that weight off eating a controlled quantity of what was eaten to gain it.

Further if social relationships dominate one's plate and these relationships are with people that eat unhealthily, the odds of moderating the food and the social pressure are overwhelmingly in favor of failure.

When disruptive ideas are introduced, no one is completely correct. We want this to be, but history teaches we usually aren't. There are some paths that lead to cul-de-sacs and some that inch us closer to the truth. Presto has the ability to move you a mile, but it involves a permanent change that goes against what is socially normal.

Penn is okay with running against social norm when it's for a just cause and we should all be happy for his success.

Penn Jillette's Oprah Moment

It’s Penn Jillette again, so you think – more debunking of fraudulent magic? Questioning God, perhaps? But no. This is a 300 page memoir of dieting. Took me by surprise. I would not have read it had I known. But Jillette pulls it off by simply being Penn Jillette. He is loud, obnoxious, rambunctious, sarcastic and he swears way too much for it to have any impact at all. But he’s entertaining, self-deprecating, highly opinionated, and funny. So it works. Much better than run of the mill diet books.

Like most Americans, as he got older, Jillette got heavier. He noticed that while chocolate cake was a treat his mother made a few times a year, it was now available daily, if not hourly. There is junk food everywhere – at meetings, in the green room, backstage, and he ate basically all day long. He was sluggish, out of breath, and in denial. And he was on blood pressure meds and other joys. And this is someone who has never smoked, drank or taken recreational drugs. By losing a hundred pounds, he found he could give up the meds. He could taste tastes better and he lost his cravings for doughnuts and other such staples of SAD – the Standard American Diet. And with this book he has become an evangelist for it.

To the the point of being aggravating. It’s a 300 page testimonial to Ray Cronise, who designed his program, and who is himself now leveraging off helping Penn Jillette lose that hundred pounds. It’s a multipronged multimedia marketing campaign, and that lessens the love, at least for me. For the millions of the overweight and obese, I hope it is inspirational.

The book desperately needs editing. It is terribly repetitive. Jillette has no problem saying the same thing eight or ten times. It is possibly the longest diet memoir in history. It’s almost a page a day of his diet. But it’s from the heart, and it’s the usual honest, forthright and fearless Penn Jillette, so there’s little point going on about it.

The message is terrific. Eat better and you will crave better foods. It’s a virtuous circle. You lose the extra weight, you feel more energetic, and your body thanks you by making life easier. But it’s not magic.

The Magician who Disappeared

PRESTO! is not your typical diet book--and the author is most definitely NOT your typical dietician! In fact, the Penn Jillette suggests readers do NOT be too quick to use his drastic weight loss method. On the contrary, the author is not trying to sell the reader any plan, and makes that clear in a long preliminary disclaimer.

In his usual self-deprecating way, the author warns the reader: "This is a book written by an idiot. Take everything in this book with a grain of salt (but only a grain— salt is poison, as even this idiot now knows). I have no expertise. This book is about what I did, not about what you should do."

When faced with a serious heart blockage, the author chose a drastic plan--and the plan started with just potatoes for 2 weeks. "We were going to eat nothing but potatoes. Nothing else. Nothing but potatoes. Just potatoes. Potatoes and nothing else...we had joined a crazy cult."

Penn started off on day 1 at 304 pounds, and the weight loss was drastic and quick. In a few months he lost a THIRD of his body weight. The author made an appointment with his doctor--not to get a checkup, but to BRAG: "My doctor came in, looked at me, and gave his medical opinion: 'Wow.' I said, 'Um, this visit isn’t really a medical visit. I just came in to brag about my weight loss.'"

Perhaps the most controversial statement in the book is this: “Exercise has nothing to do with weight loss.” Penn is not saying that exercise is not good--just that it has nothing to do with losing weight. To be clear, during his extreme weight loss, the author did not exercise AT ALL. It was afterwards that he resumed exercising, and regained the muscle that had been lost. Penn admits, however, that he has not real authority on the subject: "You’ve finally done it . You found a book that has told you not to exercise. Too bad the book is written by an idiot"

In one semi-serious chapter, "Letter to the Globe after Their Lying Article About My Weight Loss," the author lambasts a Globe journalist who had accused him of lying about his weight loss. Penn insists that "My recent weight loss was not a trick. It was my life. I was in the hospital with some pretty serious hypertension issues. I was scared."

All in all, I found Presto! to be a fun, easy read. Despite the humorous tone throughout, the author is dead serious about what he had to do. "This was not a magic trick. It was not a stunt. It was not done for vanity. It was done for my health."
