Java Application Architecture: Modularity Patterns with Examples Using OSGi (Robert C. Martin Series), by Kirk Knoernschild

“I’m dancing! By god I’m dancing on the walls. I’m dancing on the ceiling. I’m ecstatic. I’m overjoyed. I’m really, really pleased.”

–From the Foreword by Robert C. Martin (a.k.a. Uncle Bob)

This isn’t the first book on Java application architecture. No doubt it won’t be the last. But rest assured, this title is different. The way we develop Java applications is about to change, and this title explores the new way of Java application architecture.

Over the past several years, module frameworks have been gaining traction on the Java platform, and upcoming versions of Java will include a module system that allows you to leverage the power of modularity to build more resilient and flexible software systems. Modularity isn’t a new concept. But modularity will change the way we develop Java applications, and you’ll only be able to realize the benefits if you understand how to design more modular software systems.

Java Application Architecture will help you

  • Design modular software that is extensible, reusable, maintainable, and adaptable
  • Design modular software today, in anticipation of future platform support for modularity
  • Break large software systems into a flexible composite of collaborating modules
  • Understand where to place your architectural focus
  • Migrate large-scale monolithic applications to applications with a modular architecture
  • Articulate the advantages of modular software to your team

Java Application Architecture lays the foundation you’ll need to incorporate modular design thinking into your development initiatives. Before it walks you through eighteen patterns that will help you architect modular software, it lays a solid foundation that shows you why modularity is a critical weapon in your arsenal of design tools. Throughout, you’ll find examples that illustrate the concepts. By designing modular applications today, you are positioning yourself for the platform and architecture of tomorrow. That’s why Uncle Bob is dancing.

Good modularization advice; not a general software architecture book
By George F
Review: 3.5 stars

This is a readable introduction to the principles of code modularity written from the perspective of a practitioner, not an academic. I can recommend it for programmers early in their careers since we all wrote code with poor dependency management when we were young, and this book guides programmers down a better path.

Beware: The book's title should be "Modularizing Java Programs" since it covers only that aspect of program design. The author appears unaware of the published field of software architecture, which would have helped him situate his good advice. This is NOT a book on software architecture, generally.

Pro:

* Chapter 7 showing the progressive packaging of the example system by applying the patterns. This provides an excellent context to understand the value of each pattern since each refactoring is preceded by a business goal like "We'd like to use this part of the code elsewhere, but not that part".

* Pattern catalog is a good introduction for new programmers to the basics of code and modularization, which include the classics and several new principles (patterns) that are good guidance.

* Emphasizes the distinction between your classes / relationships and the way those are packaged. The book refers to these as the logical and physical (from John Lakos) - though I personally greatly dislike those terms since there is nothing physical about a Java JAR file.

* Effective use of code and diagrams. Not all diagrams; not all code - just right. Mostly uses UML notation (e.g., generalization, implements, associations, components) but sometimes not (e.g., classes are rounded rectangles with shadow effect).

* Grounds the advice in today's terms. Reading Parnas' 1972 paper on KWIC is harder than reading this book because Java, JAR files, OSGi, etc. are all familiar technologies to us.

Con:

* Book title. If you bought a book on "Sewing", you'd expect it to include more than how to make shirts. The book's content covers how to understand your code's modular structure and provides patterns that describe good modular structure. An architecture book, for example, would additionally cover standard runtime patterns like Client-Server, Peer-to-Peer, and Cooperating Processes, which are not discussed in this book. The book uses the term "layers" differently than the gold standard Documenting Software Architectures book - rather significant for a book on code modularity.

* Needs catch-up since 1992. In the early 90's academics pushed ahead in understanding software architecture. Before that, it was Parnas (as quoted by the book) and DeRemer & Kron, who described code modules and relationships. Perry & Wolf (1992) and Garlan & Shaw (1994) clearly described how architecture could not be understood only from modules and we must look at other views. This book makes no reference to this major shift in the field.

* Silent on runtime and allocation views. Today, the vast majority of authors in the field of software architecture endorse the following approach to architecture: A software system can be seen from several perspectives, called views. The three most common views are the code (module view), the system at runtime (sometimes called Component-and-Connector view), and how the software is assigned to hardware (allocation view). This book is 98% about the code view and provides good advice on packaging code. It touches on the allocation view in its discussion of OSGi and hot deployment. Worryingly, it has several diagrams (6.3 to 6.6) that are probably best interpreted as runtime diagrams but portrayed as code diagrams.

* Assumes/implies that SOA is the goal. SOA is just one possible (runtime) architecture. It's a good match for many systems but the book implies (at least that's my inference) it should always be your goal.

* Conflates OSGi modularity with frameworks. Chapter 17 contains a number of examples of successful frameworks (Eclipse, Hudson, ...) that can be extended with modules not written by the framework authors and seems to imply that this future is yours (a successful "ecosystem") if you modularize your code. It is important to distinguish libraries from frameworks, however. In a library, like a math library, your code calls the library in a master-servant relationship. In a framework, your code is called by the framework when the framework decides it is ready, sometimes called the Hollywood Principle (Don't call us, we'll call you). Just packaging your code into clean modules, even OSGi modules, does not yield a framework. Frameworks work because they were designed from the start with "extension points" (Eclipse's term).

Overall: A good book for non-expert developers and its pattern library goes beyond what had already been published (e.g., cohesion, coupling, cyclic dependencies). It will be better in its 2nd edition when it's embraced some of the essential concepts from the software architecture community.

The most Important Software Architecture Practices
By T Anderson
Finally someone has put the most important software architecture practices into words. Within this book lies the concepts that are the heart of true agility. Without a modularized architecture, any decent size project can not achieve agility. I have seen so many agile projects flop because they ignored architecture, in particular they ignored modularization.

This book also provides the keys concepts needed to ensure modifiability, the number one quality attribute for any architecture. It drives home the importance of physical design. An often overlooked aspect of designing modularity, yet it is the most important. Good logical design does not really matter if you have a poor physical design.

The book is broken down into 3 parts and includes an appendix that gives an overview of the SOLID Principles.

Part 1 The Case for Modularity introduces modularity and how it relates to complexity, architecture, SOA, Reuse, Design Rot, and Technical Debt. Part 1 chapters include Module Defined, Two Facets of Modularity, Architecture and Modularity, Taming the Beast, Realizing Reuse, Modularity and SOA, and Reference Implementation. The last chapter Reference Implementation shows how to apply several of the patterns through a series of refactorings applied to a sample architecture.

The sample did not include OSGi. The reason the author left OSGi out of the picture is that you do not need it to design proper modularized architecture. It is a tool to enhance the runtime experience, not the design experience. I was glad the author took this approach.

Part 2 of the book is the pattern's catalog. I have listed the chapter and the patterns included below.
-Base Patterns: Manage Relationships, Module Reuse, and Cohesive Modules
-Dependency Patterns: Acyclic Relationships, Levelize Modules. Physical Layers, Container Independence , and Independent Deployment
-Usability Patterns: Published Interface, External Configuration, Default Implementation, and Module Facade
-Extensibility Patterns: Abstract Modules, Implementation Factory, and Separate Abstractions
-Utility Patterns: Collocate Exceptions, Levelize Build, and Test Module

The pattern form (sections of the patterns) are Pattern Name, Pattern Statement, a Sketch, Description, Implementation Variations, Consequences, a Sample, and a Wrapping Up section.

Part 3 of the book provides a introduction to OSGi within several contexts. Part 3 chapters include Introducing OSGi, The Loan Sample and OSGi, OSGi and Scala, OSGi and Groovy, and the Future of OSGi.

The author has put up a site that includes a pattern catalog on his site Java Application Architecture: Modularity Patterns.

The author has all the source code available on github. It is organized by sample/pattern name. The code is very well organized and usable.

This book is not only for Java developers. It is a great book for anyone developing object oriented systems. It easily translates to .NET. I was constantly drawing parallels with my experience using PRISM to develop modular .NET applications.

This is a must read for every architect and developer interested in doing architecture right. The concepts in this book will take you to a new level of quality with your architectural designs.

Should be superfluous
By Per Holst
Kirk Knoernschild's book ought to be made superfluous, but as it stands it is direly needed.

At least the first two parts: "The Case for Modularity" and "The Patterns" should be known by heart by any Java developer. It should be second nature for disciplined and professional developers.

I highly recommend the book for anyone interested in modularity, especially developers looking at an existing code base resembling a big ball of mud who wants to disentangle it.

Fra Angelico (Metropolitan Museum of Art Series), by Laurence Kanter, Pia Palladino

This beautiful book, published in conjunction with the first major exhibition of Fra Angelico’s work since the cinquecentenary exhibition of 1955 in Florence, will feature more than seventy paintings, drawings, and manuscript illuminations covering all periods of the artist’s career, from round 1410 to 1455. Also included will be fifty selected works by his assistants and closest followers.

Fra Angelico (“the angelic friar”; ca. 1390/95–1455) was one of Renaissance Florence’s leading painters. In addition to his celebrated altarpieces and frescos in Florence, Fiesole, Cortona, Perugia, and Rome, Fra Angelico also completed many masterpieces on a small scale. His predella panels, the small narrative scenes included beneath large altarpieces, are among the most innovative creations in fifteenthcentury Florence, while his images of the Virgin and Child still retain the inspirational immediacy and presence that first secured the artist’s reputation as the premier painter of his age.

Research undertaken in the last fifty years now allows scholars to reconstruct a more historically reliable biography of Fra Angelico that goes beyond the legends and traditions to establish his position not only as one ofthe greatest masters of the fifteenth century, but also as one of the most intellectually accomplished painters who ever lived.

Slightly biased review from a distant relative
By Dorna Caskie
The Rev Dr. Donald Caskie was not a novelist, but he wrote well and he lived a remarkable life. The first half of this book is the story of how he, as a leader of the Church of Scotland in occupied France, operated part of an "underground railway" to rescue Allied POWs and get them to safe ground. The situations he describes are scary, funny, and profound. The last half of the book takes a very different turn (spoiler). I am ordering the book now from Amazon because I haven't read it in a while, but I recall quite a few spiritual passages while he was in prison. He simply tried to live his life and be the man he was under terrible circumstances. Maybe 40 or more years ago there was a movie made of this book, and there was an announcement last year that the BBC would be doing a new mini-series of the story, but I haven't seen it yet.

I initially purchased this book because I was going to visit Islay, Scotland where the author and main character was from...I ended up stumbling into a fascinating read. Well written with a good dose of Scottish Character.

Enjoy...

A great book for everyone to enjoy!
By Deborah Shechter
I love this book! It is a true story told by the Tartan Pimpernel himself. World War II told from another angle. The author has a great sense of humor despite the circumstances. A heartening story. Absolutely recommended!

An aspring baker's perspective
By Richard
I should be clear that I'm writing this as a younger professional baker who has focused on whole grains, at work and at home. I've only been doing this a couple years and I have a lot to learn. Overall I highly recommend this book and am happy that I purchased it. The recipes are good, the proportions have been well researched, and after doing a dozen or so I'm very happy with what I've eaten and learned. Tartine Bread is what got me into bread baking in the first place and in many ways changed the direction of my life. With that said, I have some constructive criticisms of the new book - I focus on the bread section, I'm not interested in pastry.

And an aside: I see in other reviews beginning bakers who had difficulty - I don't think this is a book for beginners, start with Tartine Bread, and even then only if you are dedicated. These methods make the best breads that exist, but not without a learning curve.

The flaw of this book, and of many baking books and the food publishing industry in general, is that they are simply recipe books. Recipes are nice, they give you a place to start, and they slowly but surely add to one's intuitive knowledge - but they don't teach you much about the big picture. I was really really hoping that this book would build on Tartine Bread in that direction. Tartine Bread laid out a good foundation, both in technique and in some background theory, but it left me wanting so much more. I had high hopes that this book, focusing on whole grains, would have dived deeper into the nuances of naturally leavened baking, both in general and with the variety of different grains.

There are some simple examples: He has bumped up the salt percentage to 2.5% from the 2% used in Tartine Bread. Why? Has he changed his overall opinion on salt, or does the change arise from using more whole grains? He adds wheat germ to every loaf in the book; why? That seems so random, and yet there is no explanation (unless I missed it). The time in the dutch oven in this book has been extended to 30 minutes before the cover is removed. Why? Even the basic structure of the recipes lacks important explanation.

But more profoundly, I think there's a lot he leaves out about the overall skill of baking - and for me, I want skills, not blueprints. My loaves turn out pretty good, but I've never pulled a loaf from my oven that has the open, creamy crumb structure I have seen at Tartine or in his pictures. There must be so much to say about the nuances of managing a leaven, about the feel of the dough at different stages, about the final proof and what you look for and how that pertains to whole grains, about hydration and how it affects each variable in the process.. and about how each grain reacts differently to the whole baking process.. not to mention all the factors that affect the crust and structure of the loaf through the end of the bake. And there still isn't one book with practical, comprehensive information about milling and flours.. (aging vs. not aging fresh milled flour, flour strength, how fine vs. course milling affects the loaf, etc etc etc..)

Again - I write this as a baker who is a voracious learner who is never satisfied with his skills and knowledge. For someone that just wants a recipe book, it's a great recipe book - my favorite. 5/5. But as a tool to learn, 2/5.. Basically, I'm bummed that a guy who clearly has so much passion and knowledge and wisdom seems to be holding back. I'd much rather he focus on the craft itself than page after page of pretty photos which are a reminder of my elusive goal to develop as a baker! So I write this review largely to cast my vote: I don't think we need any more recipe books. I want to learn the knowledge and craft that are behind it all..

Tempered Enthusiasm, Partial Disappointment
By Rick
Chad Robertson explains in “Tartine Book No. 3” that “Tartine bread is built within a system that defines our approach to baking” (p. 32). This system is presented in a section called “Master Method for Tartine Loaves” that provides the underlying foundation for bread baking with this book. There are certain aspects of this method that have merit and for which I have some excitement for, yet I believe that parts of it are over-simplified and disappointing. Therefore, I wish to now join the ranks of the critical reviewers, but if it’s any consolation I can honestly say that my favorite bread book at least has a picture of Chad Robertson on the cover—although it was authored by someone else! Said book, “The Bread Builders: Hearth Loaves and Masonry Ovens” by Daniel Wing and Alan Scott, would be a great addition to your bread baking library if you decide to bake from Robertson’s Tartine books because it will help address some of the shortcomings of the Tartine method.

One of the best things the Tartine method has going for it is the use of Dutch ovens for baking with. The rationale is well-explained in “Tartine Bread,” “Home bakers are faced with the challenge of saturating with steam an oven designed to ventilate moisture. I have tried many methods for steaming in a conventional home oven, from wet towels to boiling pots of water, but no matter how much steam was created, it was impossible to trap enough moisture needed to achieve results at home similar to those from a professional bread-baking oven….Using the dutch oven at home allows you to bake gaining the two main characteristics of a professional brick oven: a sealed moist chamber and strong radiant heat. The results are indistinguishable from those using a professional baker’s oven” (p. 66). Some of the product images supplied by customers of their finished loaves from “Tartine Bread” are quite impressive and they largely verified Robertson’s prediction in “Tartine Bread”: “I would not attempt a book with the home baker in mind if the results could never live up to the images. They can. And they will” (p. 32).

The one thing that we do not know from product images is what is happening on the bottom of the loaf. Although the top may appear very appealing, the bottom may have been burned to some extent. This is the area where I have had consistency problems with the Tartine method. Part of the problem arises from pre-heat instructions. Both “Tartine Bread” (p. 67) and “Tartine Book No. 3” (p. 41) specify a 20 minute pre-heat at 500F. I knew before I ever baked a single recipe from Tartine that there is no way that a cold Dutch oven placed in a cold oven will come up to 500F in 20 minutes. Because my results were variable, I decided to troubleshoot using a data logging thermometer and two K type thermocouples (one sensing the surface temperature of the Dutch oven and the other sensing the air in the vicinity of the Dutch oven). The advantage of this setup is that the steel braided thermocouples are thin enough to pass out through the oven door while maintaining a good seal and not requiring multiple opening and closings of the door to take temperature readings with an infrared device. With the Dutch oven on the lowest rack (as specified by Robertson), the air temperature in the oven took 21 minutes to reach 500F. That was about what was expected, but at 21 minutes the temperature of the Dutch oven was only 371F. The total pre-heat time for the Dutch oven to finally reach 500F was actually 47 minutes--over double the instructed time. So, the Dutch oven continues to heat up well past the 20 minute period specified by Robertson, and the results vary depending upon how much longer you actually wait before you bake.

Your oven’s controls do not know of the existence of a Dutch oven (nor of a baking stone). I have just demonstrated to you that these items can be at a very different temperature than the air in the oven. The information presented in “The Bread Builders” is aimed at assisting people to bake with masonry ovens, but I have found that some of this information has been equally helpful in fine-tuning results from the Tartine method.

Robertson writes that his method “is devoted to the use of natural leaven, often called sourdough. I promote using a ‘younger’ leaven with very little acidity” (“Tartine Bread,” p. 15). This has been nice for my family, because my wife will eat some of his repertoire whereas she normally is not interested in sourdough breads. Robertson provides instructions on how to determine when your leaven is ready to bake, called a “float test.” I have found that my Tartine-method younger leaven typically passes this test around a pH of 4.7 to 4.8. This is in contrast to “Peter Reinhart’s Whole Grain Breads” (p. 77) which specifies a range of 3.5 to 4.0.

There are some authors who only use sourdough starter to provide acidity while the final dough is leavened primarily by commercial yeast rather than from the slower acting wild yeasts naturally present in the starter. I have generally found these recipes to be mild in taste, and it is not totally apparent to me whether the extra effort to bake pure sourdough without commercial yeast is justified given the extra time involved. In “Tartine Book No. 3,” the master method has changed somewhat from the first book to include even longer bulk rise times of 3-4 hours (or overnight) and the final rising expected to take 3-5 hours (or overnight). These are very significant time commitments.

In “Tartine Bread,” the sourdough starter was refreshed once per day, but the actual Tartine Bakery did not follow that method. This always concerned me greatly. Robertson writes thus regarding the bakery, “We always feed at moderate room temperatures using a small seed amount (less acid transfer), and we feed often—a few times per day depending on the season” (p. 72). Happily, the Tartine method has been modified in “Book No. 3” to be two times per day, which is definitely an improvement. For some time, I tried a 2X/day refreshment scheme by another author, but I was never entirely satisfied with its leavening. After researching and trying out a lot of approaches by different authors, I came to the conclusion that my cultures were better off with three refreshments per day leading up to a bake. If you try out Robertson’s starter instructions and are satisfied—then all is well. Just remember that “The Bread Builders” has one of the best presentations on maintaining a sourdough starter, and it can be of great assistance if you need troubleshooting advice.

“Tartine Book No. 3” has a much larger repertoire than “Tartine Bread.” Some of the recipes look quite interesting, if not even exotic. I expect that it will be an interesting journey.

Update May, 2016: over the last two years, the book has proven to be both interesting and exotic. It has been my general experience that the pan loaf style of baking has worked better for my taste buds with these recipes than the darker baked boules that Tartine is more famous for. In almost every instance where I have made a dark baked boule I have regretted it and wished I hadn't. I have been finding that Tartine pan loaves often have a very agreeable crumb that works excellent for sandwiches, while the dark crust just seems to overwhelm and dominate the wonderful crumb flavor. I feel justified in baking these recipes using a pan because it was covered in the first book, being perfected by one of the test bakers whose name was Dave (see "Tartine Bread, pp. 84-87).

I was also given a book by Samuel Fromartz called "In Search of the Perfect Loaf, a Home Baker's Odyssey." Fromartz visited the Tartine bakery and provides valuable information on dough hydration which has resulted in better gluten development of the loaves that I bake from this book. I plan on continuing on with my journey through this book, but I expect that it will be slowed somewhat by going back to bake more often from the first Tartine book which has yielded some favorites that I have missed baking while concentrating my efforts on this book.

Excellent, but should have been proof-read once more
By Emil Atanasov
I love this book. I love Chad and Tartine, too. He's a fantastic baker, and a great guy, and I enjoyed meeting him in his esteemed bakery. I own the first Tartine book and had this one pre-ordered for months before it just arrived in time for the holidays. This morning I made the Salted Chocolate Rye Cookies and they are simply awesome. I've already read most of the book and I'm going to have quite a bit of fun with many of the recipes. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has at least moderate baking experience and wants to go to the next level with recipes that use whole, ancient grain flours and cultured milk and cream such as kefir.

The reason I'm giving taking a star off the rating for this book is that it needs attention in the accuracy of some of the recipes. I'm going to point one as an example. The Chamomile-Kamut Shortbread recipe was obviously not given enough attention to detail by the editor. It asks for 10g of chamomile flowers to be infused into 53g of honey. Well, that's great on paper, but trying to do this in reality produces a sticky mess of the worst quality. You'll end up with almost all of your honey being bound by the flowers and/or tea-bag you're using. You may be able to squeeze out 1 tablespoon out of the original 1/4 cup quantity of honey. The recipe goes on to tell you to "Remove the chamomile and discard." Then it never tells you what to do with the chamomile infused honey. And later at the end tells you to "then fold in the lemon zest and chamomile flowers". Well, for someone with experience it's not going to be a problem to figure out to whip the honey with the butter and ignore the chamomile flowers instruction, but for someone relatively new to baking it would be a problem. These kinds of confusing instructions could, and should have been avoided in a book of this quality. UPDATE: I just finished baking these and noted yet another error/inaccuracy in the same shortbread recipe. It instructs to cut the shortbread into 1x2" cookies and that the recipe would yield about 5 dozen cookies. That means 60 cookies at 2 sq. in. per cookie, or 120 sq. in. of shortbread needed to get that yield. I'll let you decide how to get that from a 6x10" pan (i.e. 60 sq. in. of baked surface). In other words, the actual yield is half of what the recipe promises. Yes, the book was definitely rushed to print before it was ready for prime time.

I also agree with one of the previous comments that points out that the book has an air of pretentiousness about it. Though, as they say, it ain't bragging if you can do it, and they definitely can do it at Tartine. Still, let's remember Charlie Trotter and pause...take a breath...and be human again.

One more thing that I was thrilled about was the primer on kefir and making kefir cream and butter. It was sort of a synchronicity for me as I had just started culturing raw milk kefir about 3 weeks ago and made kefir cream and butter about 4 days before the book showed up. I was super stoked about this and will be making the Lemon-Poppy-Kefir Pound Cake as soon as my next batch of kefir cream is ready so I can beat it into butter. On that note, if you have not yet had real kefir-cultured butter from raw cream, well, I'm simply hoping you will do yourself a favor and make it so that you can understand what an incredible difference it makes.

Take a pass
By ordinaryfolk
I thought by all the information on the web this book may be a good resource of recipes and advice. While I like the exercises included in the book the recipes are not for the average person. Unfortunately, smoked mackerel crudits, sesame tuna steak and Courgette Bolognese are not favs in our home! If you are interested in eating "spa" like food this book may the answer for you. Also, the author says if you don't like it don't eat it but goes on to say to follow the recipes closely in the beginning of the "Method". There is no guidance on how to may your own meals (other than low GI foods and protein at each meal).

When You Suffer: Biblical Keys for Hope and Understanding, by Jeff Cavins

To be human is to suffer—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. In addition to our own suffering, we also encounter the suffering of those around us. While the world of medicine attempts to relieve suffering and the media tries to sell us on a life without pain, only the Church offers the perspective that suffering has meaning. St. John Paul II said that suffering without meaning can lead to despair, but if we can attach meaning to our suffering, we are capable of going through anything.

When You Suffer is a refreshing look at the mystery of pain and suffering and how to find meaning and even joy in the midst of it. Jeff Cavins discusses why we suffer and how our suffering can draw us closer to God. He explains that suffering is the greatest opportunity to love as Christ loves and how, by “offering up” our suffering, we join in Christ’s mission to redeem the world.

Review
“Jeff has a remarkable gift for helping people understand their faith in clear, understandable ways. This may be his most important work yet as he turns his attention to a topic that keeps so many people from knowing God and his peace.” —Patrick Lencioni, author, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team

“Through engaging stories and winsome humor, Jeff Cavins communicates sound biblical advice for understanding suffering and its purposes. Drawing also on the wisdom of the saints—from Augustine to John Paul II—his book offers much-needed hope to readers and invites them to ‘offer it up’ in union with Christ.” —Rev. Pablo T. Gadenz, associate professor of biblical studies, Seton Hall University

“Anyone committed to the New Evangelization will discover in When You Suffer a practical and profound resource that embodies Pope Francis’s vision of the Church as a “field hospital” for the suffering and lost. Cavins’s intelligence, honesty, and humor shine a hopeful light on a heavy and difficult obstacle to faith for many people.” —Rev. Michael White

“Suffering is not something we can avoid in this life. But it is some- thing God can use for our good—if we let him. In this engaging book, Jeff Cavins beautifully shows us how to experience God’s comfort, guidance, and strength in moments of suffering. Whether it be in the little inconveniences and frustrations we face every day or when our lives are completely turned upside down, Jesus wants to meet us in the crosses we face and help us find new light, especially when we fear all has become dark.” —Edward Sri, author, Men, Women and the Mystery of Love

“We have a pressing need in our Church today for a theology of suffering, and Jeff Cavins has responded to this need. In When You Suffer, Cavins presents a compelling synthesis from Scripture and Tradition that is not just necessary but incredibly useful. I can think immediately of ten people to whom I’d give a copy of this book.” —Fr. James Mallon, host of EWTN’s Cross Training

“Cavins takes on a perennial enigma of the human experience with much scriptural insight and spiritual wisdom. The words of St. Gianna Molla capture the heart of the message, ‘One cannot love without suffering or suffer without loving.’ And his suggestions for ‘offering it up’ are particularly compelling.” —Bishop Michael Byrnes, auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Detroit

“When You Suffer helps the reader to approach suffering in a realistic and honest manner. In a confused and impatient world, this book is a welcome remedy. It’s not just about suffering, it’s about the way we live and understand living. Jeff Cavins has given us a tool that is relevant, smart, and personable.” —Fr. Randy Dollins, vicar general of the Archdiocese of Denver

“Jeff Cavins has written an excellent book which sheds the profound light of the Scripture on that most universal of human realities, suffering. Read this yourself and give to your friends. This book will help tears turn into joy.” —Ralph Martin

“Jeff Cavins has written a solid, practical, book of biblical wisdom about handling the big and little suffering that come our way as Christians. Besides Scripture, he draws on the Catechism and the writings of the saints, especially St. John Paul II. It’s easy to read, covers the territory, and is not too long. I plan on consulting it the next time suffering crosses my path!” —Dr. Peter S. Williamson, professor of sacred Scripture, Sacred Heart Major Seminary

“Suffering can be destructive or redemptive. Jesus forever defeats destructive suffering through the mystery of his cross and resurrec- tion. Jeff Cavins teaches this through specific helps based squarely on Scripture.” —John Michael Talbot, founder of the Brothers and Sisters of Charity

A Practical Resource for Transforming Suffering Into Purposeful Living
By Jeannie
All of us have asked the questions, “Why do good people suffer? Why do I have to suffer when I believe in Jesus, and He has promised new life, healing, and goodness to me?” In Jeff Cavins’ new book, When You Suffer: Biblical Keys for Hope and Understanding, he offers readers a refreshing (but not new) perspective on why we suffer and how to suffer well.

Cavins takes the reader back to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, where the first sin occurred. He relates that event to the Crucifixion, in which Jesus became sin. Jesus showed us how to live by way of carrying our own crosses, but the concept of “offering it up” has become convoluted and cliched to many (cradle) Catholics who heard it ad nauseum growing up. Consider this quote from When You Suffer:

"The gospel of Jesus Christ is not just about dying, which is where many people stop. He came to show us how to live, and in showing us how to live, he showed us how to suffer. If we really want an understanding of suffering, we need to look deeply into the life of Jesus."

Most of us don’t desire suffering, even if we’ve come to accept it as an inevitable part of our life’s journey. The problem isn’t that we know we must suffer, but that we haven’t really learned how to suffer well. Cavins explains through simplicity and wisdom that suffering is meaningless unless we learn to unite our moral and physical suffering to the suffering of Jesus. It’s ultimately an act of the will, in which we say, “Jesus, I offer this up to You for (your intention).”

Because of Cavins’ extensive knowledge of Scripture, he is able to relate his points back to the Bible. One such reference included St. Paul’s letter to the Colossians (1:24) that states:

"Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ on behalf of his body, which is the church…"

Cavins explains beautifully that Jesus’ sacrifice on the Cross was not defective or incomplete, but that He – as the Head of the Church – wants us to compensate for the Body – which is the Church. This incredible analogy succinctly describes why we are called to suffer with Jesus. All of our afflictions are permitted by God for a grander purpose, which is to draw us out of ourselves and focusing on our pain into the Heart of Jesus and bringing Him our offering of pain as intercessory payment. Essentially, when we offer up our hardships to Jesus on someone else’s behalf, we can view it as “heavenly cash” (p. 95) that is paid for someone else’s benefit.

Using anecdotal examples of how Cavins has learned to suffer in this way, the reader gleans how the principles of When You Suffer are put into practice. The final chapter provides ten tips on what to do when facing despair, how to pray through suffering (especially using devotions, such as the rosary and Seven Sorrows of Mary), and how forgiveness is a form of healing in suffering. When You Suffer is a must-read for anyone who has questioned why misfortune or constant hardship has befallen him, because he will be encouraged and uplifted to discover the treasure hidden in the midst of his pain. A valuable grief resource, When You Suffer could be used in bereavement ministries (such as Stephen Ministry) or group study, especially during Lent.

Finding a Purpose in Suffering
By Patrice Fagnant-macarthur
In When You Suffer: Biblical Keys for Hope and Understanding, Jeff Cavins tackles the difficult question of why a good God allows us to suffer and what we can do to make that suffering have value in our lives. He defines suffering as anything that makes our life less than ideal, so this can include life’s minor inconveniences as well as the heavy-duty suffering that can come with physical, mental, or emotional pain.

Cavins separates suffering into two categories: physical and moral. Physical is temporal, of this earth. It is temporary. Moral, on the other hand, can have eternal consequences and lead to the loss of eternal life. He also states that there are different purposes for suffering. Punitive is suffering as the result of sin. In a statement that many people today would be uncomfortable with, he maintains that God does punish us, but He does it for our good. However, not all suffering is punishment for sin. Some suffering is probative, or a testing of our faith. Other suffering is disciplinary, in which God is trying to educate us, once again for our benefit.

Cavins also calls into question our modern understanding of what it means for God to be good. The ancient Greeks believed that to be happy was to be good. Whereas we tend to equate “happiness with feeling good.” Cavins quotes Peter Kreeft who states, “By ancient standards, God might be good even though he lets us suffer, if he does it for the sake of the greater end of happiness, perfection of life and character and soul, that is, self.”

Is there meaning in our suffering? Cavins’ unequivocal answer is yes, provided that our “suffering is joined with the suffering of Christ.” Anyone raised Catholic has probably been told to “offer it up” when complaining about one thing or another. Here is where that comes in. We are called to share in Christ’s suffering. St. John Paul II maintained that “nothing was lacking in Christ’s suffering, but so that we might know the love of God more deeply, Christ has made room in the suffering for us to participate in it.” But this doesn’t happen by default. We have to will our sufferings to be united with His.

Cavins also discusses some practical ideas for how to cope when you are suffering. He states that “suffering gives you the opportunity to grow . . . [into] a holier person, a more patient person, a person who endures, a person who is kinder, a person who is more merciful. All of this is the fruit of suffering in your life.” That doesn’t necessarily make it easier to accept. For that reason, Cavins offers a list of “Ten Things to Do When You Suffer,” which includes such items as entrusting yourself to God, going to Confession, praying the Rosary, and keeping an eternal perspective.

Cavins has tackled the subject of suffering well. The question of why we suffer has always plagued humanity and will no doubt continue to do so. When one is in pain, no glib answers will suffice. One subject Cavins doesn’t touch on is why young babies and children have to suffer, which is even more difficult to accept than adult suffering. Still, for someone who wants to learn more about a theology of suffering or who is struggling to find meaning and value in a pain-filled existence, When You Suffer may offer the answers that they need.

A book that helps you find meaning in suffering
By Stuart Dunn
When You Suffer is the second book from Jeff Cavins in his recent "Biblical Keys" series. The first book was entitled Praise God and Thank Him and focused on a joyful life. This latest book focuses on hope and understanding for moments of suffering. With that theme and the purple book cover, this book screams LENT! So I figured, that would be a good time to read through it and share it with you. The book begins with a chapter on the notion of an "ideal life." That concept is hard to grasp, so he narrows it down to an ideal day. After thinking about your ideal day, which involves doing things you enjoy doing, he broadens us back to an ideal life, which involves a predictable life, comfort, and one that reflects your gifts. Unfortunately, real life is never like the ideal life. Real life is uncomfortable and full of suffering.

This leads to the next chapter, which discusses the meaning of suffering. He doesn't dive into the weighty Scripture on making your suffering mean something, but instead gives us two concrete examples of people (one being Pope John Paul II) who took their suffering and made it matter. Chapter Three takes us all the way back to Adam and Eve to show how and why they suffered. He then provides us with a few brief pages with examples of suffering all throughout salvation history. Chapter Four provides different purposes for suffering, i.e., punitive, probative, and disciplinary. Chapters Five and Six detail the concepts of supernatural suffering and Jesus' suffering and our participation in it. The final chapters are the most practical/beneficial as they focus on practical things you can do when you suffer, such as prayer, confession, and, trusting that God will never put you through more than you can handle.

We are all fallen human beings in a state of sin. This sin leads to suffering, and this suffering is something that will never leave us until we reach Heaven. Fortunately for us, suffering isn't the end result, but merely a spiritual tool we can use to grow closer to God. So let Jeff Cavins easy to understand writing style and his vast Scriptural wisdom be your guide to this difficult concept. You might also want to get a second copy, because with a topic like this, it's sure to be a well-borrowed book.
