I've always known Evel as the living legend - the daredevil. But over the past months, I learned to admire the real Evel. This is the kind of book you read from start to finish without realizing a few hours just flew by. I've shown it to a number of friends and even the non-Evel fans have a hard time putting it down. Evel Ways is packed with pictures, captions and personal sidebars all woven into a fascinating story line. The book highlights many of the everyday people in Evel's life as well as the famous people who became Evel's pals over the years including a tribute from Muhammad Ali and Jack Nicklaus.
The first authorized book ever from the King of Suntmen is sure to be a record breaker and priced right to boot. Excellent reading, great gift book and immediate collectors item for every Evel Knievel memorabilia enthusiast. Wish I'd have hung on to that Evel lunchbox.

Another success for Evel!

I am a long time fan of the Great One. This book was everything I was hoping for. Lots of pictures and anecdotes. It resolved many questions I had concerning his career and life. I would strongly recomend it. Just wish that the book was a little larger but otherwise a must read for those who grew up watching the greatest daredevil ever.

Someone dropped this book into my lap the other day. Such an interesting topic! Evel is pompous as all get out; cocky; womanizing; self-serving; a true American and a real legend. He did stupid stunts and thrilled audiences worldwide. If you have any curiousity whatsoever about what made Evel Knievel, get this book. You'll read it in one sitting, and get an eye-popping glimpse into some amazing photos. If you have any curiousity whatsoever about the psychosis of hype, how the media works, and how lucrative lying can be, this book will provide you with some clues. Just read between the lines (assuming there are other intelligent people out there who are curious about Evel). At the end, I felt sorry for the guy; I realized how human he really is. ...

About the Author
Herbert Zettl is a professor emeritus of the Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts Department at San Francisco State University (SFSU), where he led the Institute of International Media Communication and received the California State Legislature Distinguished Teaching Award and the Broadcast Education Association's Distinguished Education Service Award. Prior to joining the SFSU faculty, Zettl worked at KOVR (Stockton-Sacramento) and as a producer-director at KPIX, the CBS affiliate in San Francisco, where he participated in a variety of CBS and NBC network television productions. Because of his outstanding contributions to the television profession, Zettl was elected to the prestigious Silver Circle of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Northern California Chapter. He is also a member of the Broadcast Legends of the NATAS Northern California Chapter. Lecturing extensively at universities and professional broadcast institutions both in the United States and abroad, Zettl has presented key papers at a variety of national and international communication conventions. He is the author of VIDEO BASICS, TELEVISION PRODUCTION HANDBOOK and SIGHT SOUND MOTION, which are translated into several languages and published internationally. His numerous articles on television production and media aesthetics have appeared in major media journals worldwide, and he also developed an interactive DVD-ROM -- Zettl's VideoLab 4.0 (Cengage Learning). His previous CD-ROM version won several prominent awards, including the Macromedia People's Choice Award, the New Media Invision Gold Medal for Higher Education, and Invision Silver Medals in the categories of Continuing Education and Use of Video.

Stay in the relationship

I purchased this book for my grandkids because several were experiencing relationship troubles. I felt it was because, as girls, they believed they had to "love" the guy enough and part of that was excepting abuse to "show their love." Teaching my girls to learn to respect their own rights is so very important because I wasn't taught that when I grew up. This book gets the job done. They may not get all the Respect Me Rules down right away, but it will plant a seed and I pray that they learn it is not OK for their dates to mistreat them. I recommend it for anyone trying to help another learn respect and the best part is, they encourage couples to stay together--not get out, like other books do about this topic.

Finally a book on abusive relationships that can be used by everyone.

As a behavioral health clinician for the past 30 years, clients that were in abusive relationships seemed to never run out of reasons they stayed with the abuser. While I was able to provide emotional support and a few good ideas, I wish I had had a copy of "Respect me Rules" by Michael and Shelly Marshall to keep me on track.

This 160 page book is an excellent tool for the clinician or someone suffering the various forms of abuse that can be dished out by a partner. Too often I was caught up with trying to understand why a person stayed when I should have been more focused on ways to curtail the ongoing abuse. The "Respect me Rules" offer good practical advice a person can use to shape up a partner's behaviors. I will be using the book as a guide I can follow in therapy sessions and sharing it as a workbook with clients.

I would offer this word of caution for a person who wants to start using the book on their own. The relationship usually gets worse before it gets better, as the authors point out, when the partner escalates their abusive behaviors as a way to try and maintain control. If you are not working with a therapist, it would be best if you arranged a regular check in routine with a trusted friend, a member of the clergy or a member of your extended family to assure them you are ok.

It's all logical things, but unfortunately as a target of an abuser, you are not in a logical frame of mind. This book is full of affirmations and truths that are good to contemplate on. It has some good advice and lots of reminders even if you already know what the abuse cycle is about and you're on the road to healing. Many things are repetitious if you've read on the subject, but it is still worth the cost of the book.

Wouldn't it be nice if we lived in a world where respect was the norm. We don't. For many understanding, expecting, or demanding respect is a difficult concept -- that's where this book comes in. Knowledge is power -- your power -- your control of yourself!

About the Author
Geshe Yeshe Tobden was born in 1926 to a family of wealthy farmers in Ngadra, a village one day's walk south of Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, and became a monk at age twelve. After the Chinese invasion of his homeland in 1959, he was arrested, but escaped, and spent two years crossing the Tibetan Plateau on foot until reaching the border with India. He completed his geshe studies in India, and spent several years teaching at the university in Varanasi. When he was forty-four, he told the Dalai Lama of his desire to live out his days in meditation retreat, for, from his boyhood, he had deeply desired the realization of reununciation, bodhichitta, and emptiness. Released from his duties at the university, he made his main residence a one-room hut above McLeod Ganj, the town in India where the Dalai Lama lives. There he lived for the remainder of his life, apart from a few teaching tours abroad, notably to fledgling Buddhist centers in Italy where these teachings were delivered. Geshe Yeshe Tobden passed away in McLeod Ganj in 1999.

Fiorella Rizzi has been a student of Buddhism since 1980, when she met the late Geshe Yeshe Tobden. Since 1997, she has been translating and editing texts on Buddhist philosophy and practice and is the founder of the nonprofit cultural association La Ruota del Dharma. She lives in Pomaia, Italy.

Tenzin Gyatso, the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, is the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people. He frequently describes himself as a simple Buddhist monk. Born in northeastern Tibet in 1935, he was as a toddler recognized as the incarnation of the Thirteenth Dalai Lama and brought to Tibet's capital, Lhasa. In 1950, Mao Zedong's Communist forces made their first incursions into eastern Tibet, shortly after which the young Dalai Lama assumed the political leadership of his country. He passed his scholastic examinations with honors at the Great Prayer Festival in Lhasa in 1959, the same year Chinese forces occupied the city, forcing His Holiness to escape to India. There he set up the Tibetan government-in-exile in Dharamsala, working to secure the welfare of the more than 100,000 Tibetan exiles and prevent the destruction of Tibetan culture. In his capacity as a spiritual and political leader, he has traveled to more than sixty-two countries on six continents and met with presidents, popes, and leading scientists to foster dialogue and create a better world. In recognition of his tireless work for the nonviolent liberation of Tibet, the Dalai Lama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. In 2012, he relinquished political authority in his exile government and turned it over to democratically elected representatives.

His Holiness frequently states that his life is guided by three major commitments: the promotion of basic human values or secular ethics in the interest of human happiness, the fostering of interreligious harmony, and securing the welfare of the Tibetan people, focusing on the survival of their identity, culture, and religion. As a superior scholar trained in the classical texts of the Nalanda tradition of Indian Buddhism, he is able to distill the central tenets of Buddhist philosophy in clear and inspiring language, his gift for pedagogy imbued with his infectious joy. Connecting scientists with Buddhist scholars, he helps unite contemplative and modern modes of investigation, bringing ancient tools and insights to bear on the acute problems facing the contemporary world. His efforts to foster dialogue among leaders of the world's faiths envision a future where people of different beliefs can share the planet in harmony. Lengthy but interesting

Shantideva spoke his Bodhicharyavatara close to two millenia ago, instructing practitioners how to practice and how to live their lives. It became a major text in the Mahayana tradition.

I read the actual prose edition of it, and was very impressed with Shantideva's skillful use of logic and his conclusions of how one should live and practice. The wisdom chapter is notable in particular, for its explications of some core doctrines that can be confusing (such as anatman or no-self). I decided to read a commentary on it in order to clarify some questions I had and to gain new insight into what it was he was saying.

I picked up a copy of this book, and was fairly impressed by it. Some parts of it struck me as redundant and repetitive, but it could be argued that such repetition is important to planting wholesome seeds in the reader's head. Still, I think it would have benefited from omitting such parts.

There are also some sections which make some fairly remarkable assertions (notably a discussion of reincarnation) and which attempt unsuccessfully (IMO) to support them with logic.

There are a few other commentaries out there, such as the Dalai Lama's and Pema Chodron's. I have read neither, but the Dalai Lama's book would be worth checking out, as he is skilled at writing for the modern Western mind, and it is also maybe half the length of this book.

Extraordinary Commentary

The text this commentary is based on is a true masterpiece of enlightened literature. The scope and depth of Shantideva's Bodhicharyavatara while being immediately accessible also merits a lifetime of study and repeated reading and application. It is true guidance coming from and guiding one to the perspective of ultimate reality.
This commentary by Geshe Yeshe Tobden is rich and replete with explanations, examples and wise anecdotes that drive home the importance and relevance of Shatnideva's text. Geshe Yeshe Tobden lived in a one room shack high in the mountains for 30 years meditating and practicing. Is there a way to be more highly qualified than that when it comes to writing a commentary like this?
This text is profoundly helpful and insightful for one on the Buddhist path. Most importantly, it takes one from the constricted suffering of self cherishing to the enlightened expanse of selfless benefit.
Highly recommended.

The Way of Awakening - A Commentary by Geshe Tobden

This is a commentary on Shantideva's Way of the Bodhisattva by a Tibetan teacher who fled Tibet in 1961. While living as a hermit outside Dharamsala, he eventually became a teacher to some Italian Tibetans and visited Italy regularly for a number of years. Because of this, I think, his commentary is clearer and more understandable for lay people. His talks were made into a book and then translated into good, modern English. He also used a different translation of Shantideva by a Tibetan monk. Shantideva has some difficult sections, including Ch. 9, on wisdom, which Geshe Tobden has commented on, with extra material in the appendixes. If you wish to study Shantideva, I recommend getting this book as one of your texts.

Suspense filled romance The plot is well written and keeps you turning the pages to see what will happen The heroine is a strong feisty female who sometimes acts before she thinks. The Hero is a strong Alpha male who knows just what she needs to keep her safe even from herself and has no problem taking her in hand Can the heroine accept his way of helping she loves the cuddles but not the spankings what will happen when he puts his foot down Can they figure out how to work together to solve the mystery and have a relationship or is the heroine just to set in her ways to let the Hero lead and guide her

Cord has his life in hand, Lena is starting new and needs Cord's solid lifestyle to help hers. He has an older house that he has sitting. She wAnts to rent it but it has too much repairs needed to rent it. Persistence pays off for Lena But Cord is sure that there is another reason she wants in this house because it is just not any house and he wants to know why. Mystery and spankings to keep Lena in line are only the start.

UNCOVERING BURIED SECRETS

Wow, this story kept me on the edge of my seat as it unfolds with all the mystery, suspense, twists and turns of Lena and how far she is willing to go to solve a mystery. How far would most of us go for a friend? I thought Lena was resourceful and clever, even if it did land her with a hot seat from Cord. The plot keeps the pages turning as it unfolds with a crime of passion, missing person, sudden move, a Victorian home and a loyalty that expands from childhood. I found the dialog witty and entertaining and the cast of characters charming with heartwarming scenes. This story is also a sweet romance of not one but eventually two couples. Men who are alpha and expect rules to be followed and spunky women who test the boundaries of those rules until they find themselves with an over-the-knee spanking. There are plenty of well-deserved spankings in this book, never over-the-top, but no sex scenes, even implied. It does have an HEA ending.

About the Author
Dr. Stewart "Stu" Tubbs is the Darrell H. Cooper Professor of Leadership and is the former Dean of the College of Business at Eastern Michigan University. He received his doctorate from the University of Kansas, his Masters and Bachelors degrees are from Bowling Green State University. He has completed postdoctoral study at Harvard Business School and at Stanford Graduate School of Business. Dr. Tubbs has consulted for numerous corporations and has won three awards for his outstanding teaching. In 1994 he received the Outstanding Leadership Award in London, England from the Academy of Business Administration. He is the author of A Systems Approach to Small Group Interaction (7th ed.), 2001 and co-author with Sylvia Moss of Human Communication (8th ed.), 2000, both published by McGraw-Hill. He also is the author of a monthly newspaper column entitled "Insights."
