The Johns Hopkins Atlas of Digital EEG: An Interactive Training GuideFrom Johns Hopkins University Press

Revised, updated, and expanded since first introduced in 2007, The Johns Hopkins Atlas of Digital EEG uses a live electroencephalogram reader, interactive computer programs, video, and traditional text to teach digital EEG reading.

Technological advances have largely rendered traditional paper EEG reading systems obsolete. The digital recordings now in use throughout most of the world carry the promise of greater accuracy and better diagnoses, but using the new software and interpreting the results require special training.

The Atlas incorporates a fully functional EEG reader that permits flexible filtering, scaling and montage changes, similar to "live" EEG readings. Users can learn to read key EEG patterns in various formats to optimize evaluation of patterns.

The Atlas also includes video examples of seizures and an accompanying Stellate signal file browser that allows synchronous viewing of selected seizure videos with corresponding EEGs.

Expert electroencephalographer Dr. Peter Kaplan narrates an extensive audio-EEG tutorial on how to read common and important EEG patterns.

The Atlas also includes MRI depiction of EEG electrode placement and a self-test of EEG skills. This second edition features expanded coverage of pediatric and infant EEG patterns, new EEGs, and updates on advanced EEG techniques for ICU recording, such as digital EEG processing with compressed spectral analysis and slow seizure pattern detections.

Note: This is a Windows-only application that requires Microsoft Windows XP or higher. Installation requires a DVD/CD drive.

With this second edition of a work already considered the standard textbook in digital EEG (d/EEG), these three noted epileptologists, Krauss, Fisher, and now Kaplan, have created a work that will become a classic in its field.

Review

Well-organized and sophisticated... as a teaching guide for clinical EEG, this atlas is highly recommended. Besides neurology residents, EEG technologists and physicians who are not experienced in clinical EEG will find this atlas a valuable reference.

Excellent EEG primer. DVD does not work on Mac.
By BojanUliev
MAC USERS BEWARE: INCLUDED DVD DOES NOT WORK ON MAC. IT'S COMPILED ONLY FOR WINDOWS.
Except for this trivial issue which, according to customer service and technical support, "cannot be fixed" (??), this book is really an excellent EEG primer, with a lot of examples, clearly written and suitable for all levels of training, from the real beginning to more advanced interpretations.
Overall 4 stars because without the DVD this book becomes a "not-at-all-interactive training guide".
Bottom line dedicated to Johns Hopkins University Press IT experts: folks please, start considering cyber-etiquette and treat Mac and Windows users equally (we're in 2012, after all).

Worst installation experience in many years of computer experience. EEG content dated and digital offerings marginal.
By Minnesota
I would have expected a prestigious institution like Johns Hopkins to put out an exceptional product. The installation was a complete disaster on both a Win 7 professional and a Win 8.1 system. In both cases I am unable to copy the files to the hard drive (an option offered but which always produces an error message that I have the wrong DVD for this version - requesting a fix for this brought a replacement DVD, which produced the same error) so I have to run the files and videos from the DVD, meaning I have to carry an external optical drive when using my Surface Pro3.

The additional software that must be installed (Persyst Insight, etc.) has links provided that are supposed to initiate installation but which are broken and do not lead to an actual installation. I had to find the files on the DVD and install manually for each of the three programs on both Windows platforms. In two cases this led to error messages within the installations and I had to go to each program's web site to download current versions, which then installed correctly.

The actual content is good though somewhat limited on the DVD. The quality of the printed book is OK but many of the pages were not trimmed and needed to be cut apart at bottom or top by hand. All in all a dismal offering from such a reputable organization. I should have known I guess - a stodgy old institution may have trouble truly embracing the digital age. Their digital rendering of EEG information is clumsy at best. To expect a smooth and well designed installation sequence and well constructed digital content was clearly a mistake on my part.

Good but there are a few problems
By S. Berman
I just started using this for part of my clinical neurophysiology board review. I am mainly going to address the DVD, which is the main reason I purchased this. But I have read some of the paper text (which also seems to be on the DVD) and it is quite well done. But the DVD presents some problems. I am running Windows 8.1 so perhaps the DVD could not have accounted for some of the changes in Windows. The basic program installed OK but then it asked me to install Persyst (an EEG reading program) and Harmonie, an additional EEG program. It said that these were important to get the full benefit of the book. They did not install from the link. So I started using the program with them. I then got a choice to run the DVD files from the DVD or to install them onto my computer. Naturally I wanted to install them onto my computer. That did not work either. It gave me the message "The DVD inserted is for a different version. Please insert the DVD to this version and restart this application (20130305.22!=20121203.22). Ok. I guess I can't install them onto my computer. This message makes no sense. This is the only DVD that came with the book. "This version" of the program comes from that DVD. So how can the DVD be "for a different version?"

Well, I wanted to use the program. So I went through some of it. The "Chapters" portion pretty much presented the book chapters. The printable EEG report sheet did not work but most of the features did.

The “Read EEG” part is an audio visual tutorial. It probably uses Flash or some other common program. It works though the quality of the images is a bit poor---somewhat blurry. But it is a very good tutorial. I have almost finished the whole thing. “View EEG” is an atlas. But unlike an atlas in a book, you can open it in the Persyst Insight program (which did not install). “Learn EEG” has various parts. The “video review” part has various videos of patients in monitoring units. These seem good. This is where one needs the Harmonie program, which also did not install. One needs Harmonie to see their EEGs.

So I needed to install those programs. I found instructions on a PDF file on the disk. I followed the instructions and manually (more or less manually) installed the programs. It was not totally manually. I found the installer on the disk and the installer did the rest. The Harmonie gives a registry error when installed but the pdf said to ignore it.
Once I installed the programs I could use Persyst Insight on the “View EEG” atlas. But here’s the catch. All you get is a 30 day trial version. After 30 days I need to buy my own copy of Persyst. This is one of those programs that does not even list a cost. You have to ask for a quote. This is for a hospital or a clinic to buy. I have not yet asked for a quote. I do not expect it to be cheap. So part of the usability of this book will last only for 30 days. Harmonie seems to work on the “video review” though each time I use it it notifies me of the registry error. But it works anyway. Just a bit of an annoyance.

All in all this is a good quality product, especially as far as the actual EEG material and teaching is concerned. The software integration, however, leaves something to be desired. And I think it is unfair to sell a book that one can only use fully for 30 days without buying an additional expensive product. Of course, I have not had it for 30 days, so perhaps the Insight program will continue to work. It is possible that the date checker may have been disabled.

I will still give it four stars.

Just My Type: A Book About Fonts, by Simon Garfield

A hugely entertaining and revealing guide to the history of type that asks, What does your favorite font say about you?

Fonts surround us every day, on street signs and buildings, on movie posters and books, and on just about every product we buy. But where do fonts come from, and why do we need so many? Who is responsible for the staid practicality of Times New Roman, the cool anonymity of Arial, or the irritating levity of Comic Sans (and the movement to ban it)?

Typefaces are now 560 years old, but we barely knew their names until about twenty years ago when the pull-down font menus on our first computers made us all the gods of type. Beginning in the early days of Gutenberg and ending with the most adventurous digital fonts, Simon Garfield explores the rich history and subtle powers of type. He goes on to investigate a range of modern mysteries, including how Helvetica took over the world, what inspires the seeming ubiquitous use of Trajan on bad movie posters, and exactly why the all-type cover of Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus was so effective. It also examines why the "T" in the Beatles logo is longer than the other letters and how Gotham helped Barack Obama into the White House. A must-have book for the design conscious, Just My Type's cheeky irreverence will also charm everyone who loved Eats, Shoots & Leaves and Schott's Original Miscellany.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, September 2011: Simon Garfield’s Just My Type presents an entertaining history of fonts, from font "pirating" dating back nearly as far as Gutenberg to the creation of Comic Sans and Ikea’s font-change controversy. With a variety of recent, news-making examples and font samples throughout, Just My Type explains how and why certain fonts can elicit emotions or gut-instinct reactions. Garfield’s humor and historical anecdotes add to his deep understanding of how something as simple as font choice can speak volumes about our cultural climate--and why it’s so easy to agonize over what font to use on a party invitation. Whether you’re already a font aficionado or can’t tell the difference between Times New Roman and Arial, this entertaining history will give you a greater appreciation of the typefaces that surround you every day. --Malissa Kent

Display Fonts, Invisible Fonts, and Font Wars
By Rob Hardy
You are looking at it right now, and if it is doing its job, you don't even notice it. It might represent a creation that has taken centuries to come to its current state of perfection, or it might be something that a dedicated specialist worked on for years and brought out a decade ago. It represents artistry directed within a circumscribed realm. I am talking about the font in which these letters are presented. Thirty years ago, fonts were usually the interest of only a select few in the printing world, but now every computer is charged with fonts and everyone gets to be an amateur typographer (technically, the font is a specific set of metal parts, or digital files, that allows reproduction of letters, and a typeface is the design of letters the font allows you to reproduce, but you can see how the words would get used interchangeably). Simon Garfield is not a professional typographer; his role is bringing out fine nonfiction about, say, stamp collecting, history, or the color mauve. But he has an amateur's enthusiasm for fonts, and communicates it infectiously in _Just My Type: A Book About Fonts_ (Profile Books). This is not a collection of type designs, though there are many illustrations. In most cases it won't help you in finding out what font you happen to be looking at (but it will tell you how to do so in surprising ways). It is a book of appreciation for an art that is largely invisible, but is also essential.

I would not like to read pages set in any of the fonts in one of Garfield's last chapters, "The Worst Fonts in the World." On the list is Papyrus, which caused a stir when it was used extensively in the film _Avatar_. The expensive film used a free (and overused) display font, and font fans noticed. There was also a font war (also known as a "fontroversy") when in 2009 Ikea decided to change its display font from Futura to Verdana. The change inspired passionate arguments in mere bystanders, "like the passion of sports fans," says Garfield, and the _New York Times_ joked that it was "perhaps the biggest controversy to come out of Sweden." The biggest of font wars has had a comic edge to it, and it is the starting point for Garfield's book. Comic Sans is a perfectly good font. It looks something like the letters you see in comic books, smooth, rounded, sans serif, clear. Because it caught on and was quickly overused, there has been a "ban Comic Sans" movement. Even the heads of the movement, which is somewhat tongue-in-cheek, admit that Comic Sans looks fine, say, on a candy packet; but they have also seen it on a tombstone and on a doctor's brochure about irritable bowel syndrome. If you see a font and you wonder which one it is, you can take steps to identify it. Lots of people like to do this. It is especially useful to examine the lower case g. (The other character that reveals a lot is the ampersand, which, maybe since it is not a letter or a punctuation mark, appears in exuberant eccentricity even in some calm fonts.) That g has a lot of variable points; it might have a lower hook or it might have a loop, it might have a straight line on the right, or the upper loop might have an ear that rises or droops, and this doesn't even get into whether the upper loop is a circle, a long or wide ellipse, or has uniform width. Take a look at the g letters shown here, or in your regular reading matter, and you will be amazed at how variable a selection of even only a few can be. If you have your g, you can look it up in font books, but there are so many fonts now that no book comes close to showing them all. There's an application for the iPhone which allows you to take a picture of the letter in question, upload it somewhere, and then get suggestions of possible matches. Or you can go to a type forum and ask there, because there are lots of people devoted to hunting down this sort of thing. And they take it so seriously that, as on many internet forums, they get rather snarky about disagreements.

If you don't pay attention to fonts (and most of them do their work best by not calling attention to themselves), Garfield's entertaining book might get you started. There are chapters about the difficult matter of copyrighting a font, because if you design a good font it is easy to copy it, and there isn't much that can be done about font piracy. Font designers work for love, not money. There's a chapter on "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy white dog" and other phrases that show all the letters, or particular words that display a lot of the letters most important to font design. There's plenty of history starting with Gutenberg and the historical Roman types from which are descended many of the fonts we read every day. Between the chapters are "font breaks" to praise Albertus or Gill Sans and to tell about how they came to be designed, with plenty of anecdotes and other funny or sad stories. This is a delightful, amusing book about a whole world most of us take for granted.

Steve Jobs invented fonts!
By Groundhog Day
When a book's first chapter promotes the idea, in so many words, that Steve Jobs invented computer fonts, you know you've sunk into the fantasy land of the Apple cult. You know, the people who believe that Jobs invented the mp3 player. Before you burn me at the stake, let it be known that I have nothing against macs. That's not the point. Religious fanaticism is.

Once chapter 1 has clarified how much or little faith you can place in the author (depending on your techno-religious orientation), you can enjoy a modestly entertaining piece of journalism--nothing too inspired nor too well researched. A few historical details kept me reading.

The typography was atrocious. Turn to page 172, for instance (the first page of chapter 12) to see rivers of white in a paragraph with amazingly poor justification. What, this was typeset in Microsoft Word? Isn't everyone in the printing world using Indesign nowadays? That page is no exception. The copy-editing is equally poor. And the paper looks like it's been recycled three times.

There are many superior books about fonts--I own several. I'd recommend starting with those (with the help of Amazon's sort by rating system), and only looking Garfield's pamphlet if you're in the mood for fast-food.

Informative and Entertaining
By joliefille
I recently took a printmaking class with emphasis on letterpress and text, so I wanted to get some background on the cultural heritage of type and print media so I could better map out what pitfalls lay before me in terms of choosing a particular typeface. This is a fascinating read about a topic that is entirely pervasive yet so often unnoticed in our culture. That the shapes of our letters convey as much meaning as the content is something that we take for granted- this book was certainly enlightening.

Perhaps, this is not the subject matter for absolutely any reader- and interest or curiosity in the subject matter at hand will definitely be useful, but it does not require one to be a die-hard about type in order to appreciate it. Though the author freely admits his hard-core enthusiasm for type, he does not present information in a way that discourages someone new to the subject from jumping right in. He has definite personal tastes- ones that you may disagree or concur with at your leisure without losing too much stake in the overall book. Your feelings on Comic Sans or Papyrus are left to you without an overbearing sense of judgement- though it is interesting to learn why they hold such notoriety in contemporary society. Overall a nice mix of history and contemporary views, blended with humor and a clear love for the topic. Not structured to be the kind of book that keeps me riveted for its entirety, but rather one that I can pick up at any point and feel enjoyment. A good casual read that I feel leaves you for the better at its end.

Presents creation of human life as a wonder granted by God
By Midwest Book Review
The Amazing Beginning Of You is a straightforward introduction to the young reader about the miracles of conception, pregnancy, and birth from a Christian perspective. Color photographs reveal the incredible process of maturing from a zygote to a baby about to be born. The act of insemination (and human sexuality per se), is not explained or detailed in The Amazing Beginning Of You, which only briefly alludes to the role of the father in providing sperm. The focus is on presenting the creation of human life as a wonder granted by God. The Amazing Beginning Of You is an excellent and recommended book for Christian parents to answer the question: "Where do babies come from?"

Dark Moon: Apollo and the Whistle-Blowers, by Mary Bennett, David S Percy

Dark Moon addresses the question that was first asked in July 1969 – did the Apollo missions really land a man on the Moon and return him alive and well to Earth, or is the record seriously flawed?

Essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the full background of Project Apollo.

Artificial lighting was used in the Apollo photographs – yet none was taken to the Moon. This book demonstrates that the Apollo photographs and the 1969 TV coverage were faked.

Dark Moon highlights the key challenges of getting human beings safely to the Moon and back. Recent NASA documents reveal startling evidence that the space agency is still unable to send a manned mission to the Moon and that lunar gravity is now a major setback. It is as if Apollo never happened.

"Departure from the Moon’s surface, which wasn't a problem during the Apollo era, is now a problem due to the perceived difficulties in getting out of the so-called deep gravity well. Furthermore, NASA admits that the agency doesn’t have sufficient understanding of radiation beyond LEO. If just one crucial link in a Moon visitation project is missing, the whole program becomes impossible." – Phil Kouts, PhD.

Radiation: "Radiation surely must be the showstopper preventing mankind’s exploration of the Universe.” – Professor Clive Dyer, 1997.

Lack of knowledge about the biological effects of and responses to space radiation is the single most important factor limiting the prediction of radiation risk associated with human space exploration. – The Augustine Commission, 2009.

Rockets: Dark Moon demonstrates that the Saturn V launcher was underpowered and may not have been able to leave low-Earth orbit.

"New research indicates that the F-1 rocket engines could only lift off the pad a modified version of the Saturn V – just 2000 tons instead of the stated 2,800 tons." – Gennady Ivchenkov, PhD.

"With such a start to the flight, the Apollo 11 craft had no chance of catching up with the required ascent schedule." – N.V. Lebedev, Veteran of Baikonur Cosmodrome

Laser Reflectors: It is not necessary to have a laser retro-reflector on the Moon in order to receive a return laser signal from the Moon – this was demonstrated back in 1962.

Dark Moon details the development of human space travel, including all the trials and tribulations to date, shows how the US and the USSR cooperated on many fronts in those pioneering days and discusses the reasons why the Soviets said nothing about Apollo, despite their political differences.

Deep Space Travel: Spacecraft will require radical conceptual renewal before a human can be sent either to Mars or the Moon and returned safely to Earth. To ensure the survival of all future astronauts the authors propose a system based the generation of artificial gravity and an environment that mimics the conditions on Earth.

The authors examine the basic essentials for finding a suitable planet for adaptation and on which self-aware beings can live. They investigate aspects of the important relationship between Earth and Mars, including structures sharing an identical geometry, topography and geography on these two very different planets.

The truth based on science
By Randle E. Walsh
One reviewer said this book has no science in it. Quite the contrary. If you actually read the book, you'll notice it's based on nothing but, science. I understand the sometimes vitriolic reviews of books like this. It's upsetting to patriotic beliefs and that we in North America may not lead the way in freedom and democracy (if anyone can really show me an example of this, that would be great), science, healthcare, education and humanitarian causes.

Anyway, Mary Bennett and David S. Percy make a very strong case, based on scientific evidence, that the NASA Moon Landings were a hoax. That is not to say that the Americans didn't go to the moon, only that if they did go, it was not with our present state of technology, which the authors themselves articulate quite well.

There are many reasons to support the Moon Landings as a hoax, but the most convincing evidence is the Van Allen Belts, named after Dr. James Van Allen who discovered the radiation belts around the Earth in 1958. To travel through the belts on the way to the moon, would take approximately 2 hours, and of course 2 hours to travel through them on the way back. The authors present plenty of evidence of the lethal dose of radiation the astronauts would recieve if they were to even attempt travelling through these radiation belts. But as I read elsewhere, it is Dr. Van Allen himself that is most convincing, and not based on his work alone. It is his condescending comments in response to questions about the Van Allen belts during the Apollo missions when he said, "Well it must be safe. We went to the moon and back." Statements like this encourage people like myself to seek out the truth.

There are a lot of other anomalies about the Apollo missions too numerous to mention here, including the strange behaviour of the astronauts themselves, especially Neil Armstrong. He was supposed to have been the first man on the Moon. You would think that he would be out there at every opportunity trying to inspire people of all ages to get involved in science. Instead, what does Armstrong do? He goes into seclusion for almost 40 years and when he does give interviews, it is carefully scripted. In case people have forgotten, it is the average taxpayer who financed these missions, so the least Armstrong could have done, was communicate with the very people who supported him! If he was that private a man, they could easliy have given the job to someone else.

So reading this book will hopefully encourage you to at least question the Moon mission landings, or even convince you the missions were a hoax. So I recommend reading this important work as well as checking out their website.

Reseachers like Bennett and Percy are very rare, so do yourself a favour and enlighten yourselves. Yes, it is upsetting to learn that what you were taught in school was a lie. But to maintain that belief, is to live in ignorance. You owe it to yourself and others, to learn the truth. The truth is a sure path to freedom.

Provocative, as evidenced by the reviews
By Dr. French
Clearly, the topic of DARK MOON hits nerves. If true, the size and extent of the cover-up and conspiracy has dire, dire implications for us all. If it is possible to pull off a hoax so central to how we view ourselves as Americans (free, honest, adventurous, leaders, explorers, etc), then most of what we take for "reality" is simply illusion. Thus, most people would argue with every fiber of their being that DARK MOON is ludicrous, stupid, impossible, and ultimately offensive and dangerous. It becomes an emotional argument, not a rational one for most. Honestly, I can't understand how someone of average intelligence or better can read this book and not be really bothered by it. Bothered by the tremendous amount of "things" that don't add up. Other reviewers seem desperate to quote various pages of the book where they can provide "proof to the World" that DARK MOON is pure fabrication, psuedo-science, quackery, snake oil, bunk, and plain old lies. Really? Then they will state, unequivically, not to get the book; not to waste your time or money on it. Why then, did those same reviewers buy DARK MOON, read it and then review it, knowing full well the crazy premise of the book? Case in point: I truly don't believe in the tooth fairy, therefore, I don't buy books claiming existence of tooth fairies, read them, then review them on Amazon. If, in the future, a tooth fairy happens to appear on my bed looking for a tooth under my pillow, then I might explore the issue further, but not ONE SECOND before my take on reality is shattered. And that is what this book does: it shatters realities.

The biggest stumbling block for most people is the extent of the conspiracy required to hoax the Apollo missions, but the book does a good job explaining it. It rang true to me because as an alternative cancer researcher and practitioner, I am fully aware of the conspiracy existing within the "cancer industry" and modern health care in general. The programming starts with indoctrination and institutionalization disguised as "education", so that a person sees their environment through very narrow blinders. An example illustrating this point is a comment from a reviewer below about the speed of light. How on Earth would that person know anything about the speed of light other than what they might have read in a book or paper? So what if researchers and scientists have made certain claims? It's all theory and conjecture mixed with agendas, with no first hand experience, and very little pure science behind it. And when rare, brave scientists start to test things truly outside the box, their results often turn mainstream theories inside out. Modern physics is much more bizarre than any scientist would prefer, and their theories and even "Laws" are becoming less and less useful in order to advance our knowledge. So why couldn't light travel at different speeds and behave in other ways given different circumstances? Why are we so quick to yell, "impossible"?

After the programming is complete, then division and segregation is necessary. No researcher works on the big picture; they work within very specialized, isolated environments, with little knowledge of other areas. Seeing a conspiracy is, therefore, nearly impossible. Also, don't discount all the politics and ego within acedemia. Ego is essential, because no scientist wants to think of himself as a fraud or a pawn, so they will often ignore or actively suppress evidence to the contrary.

Then, there are the various financial rewards and career incentives. It takes a very rare individual to seriously rock the boat once a career is established, money and prestige are rolling in and your reputation is on the line. These pressures are much worse for those with families, for obvious reasons. Never underestimate the power of money to sway opinion and suppress the truth. In addition, everyone around you is spouting the same dogma, day after day, so the social pressure to conform becomes enormous.

Finally, if all these factors are not enough to quell dissent, and there still exists scientific people willing to come forth and expose the conspiracy, then actual threats are quite effective. First, economic based threats, then various forms of blackmail, then, ultimately, physical threats. Who wouldn't tow the party line if they thought their family was in jeopardy? Anyone heard of the mysterious deaths of over 50 top microbiologists in the last 3 years, totally defying the statistics? This stuff happens folks.

So, how could thousands of people associated with the Apollo missions be in on the conspiracy? Well, 95 percent were unaware of it for the reasons mentioned above, and the remaining 5 percent were quelled with whatever means were necessary. Does this sound impossible? The true story of Jeff Wigand (sp?), who was a higher level scientist within the tobbaco industry is an excellent example. He was one of the precious few who had the courage and the fortitude to blow his whistle and reveal the huge conspiracy and cover-up involving nicotine addiction and cancer causing additives in cigarettes. The movie was entitled, "The Insider".

So, DARK MOON is provocative, to say the least. The researchers for the book claim they began their investigations in order to DISPROVE a hoax conspiracy, but switched their focus once met with the overwelming evidence to the contrary. Interesting. Also, I don't see much of an agenda here, although, clearly, NASA and other organizations with massive levels of funding have much at stake. Also, NASA has a mickey mouse section on their website trying to deflect hoax criticisms, which is compelling in and of itself.

The true strengths of DARK MOON are the discussions of radiation and the Van Allen Belts, which really are "show stoppers". The discussion of the photos goes much more in depth than you would find on the majority of web sites. There is just much more information supporting the idea that something is amiss with the Apollo missions than the average American can fathom, and whether it is all 100 percent accurate is not really the point. An inaccurate interpretation of one photo does not tarnish the glaring anomalies in hundreds of others. Besides, for you super-patriots out there, DARK MOON does not claim that Americans did not go to the moon; rather, that the version of events that the public was given (complete with photographic and video evidence) by NASA DOESN'T ADD UP. If it makes you feel better, then imagine the USA landing on the moon in the 1950s (a la Buck Rogers) and kicking communist butt all over the solar system, but at least be skeptical of the official version which is what this book does very well.

My criticisms of the book revolve around the crop circles, the sphinx and "face on Mars" material. Interesting ideas, but poorly tied in and explained. In this sense, DARK MOON is like 2 books in one; the "first" is excellent and provocative (and thankfully the majority), the "second" is strange and confusing. Oh well, read it for yourself.

Dumb and Dumberer
By J. Bob Browne
As a student of history, I find the suggestion that the Apollo moon landings were faked, as one of the most asinine ideas that has come around in a long time. NASA programs in general, and the Apollo program in particular are unsurpassed in their documentation, and openness. Thousands of photographs were taken on the surface of the moon, thousands more in orbit and ten of thousands more were taken on the Earth documenting everything from vehicle assembly, crew training, mission control, the "average" NASA engineer, testing, simulations and countless more. This visual documentation is nothing compared to millions of pages of technical documentation related to the moon landings. Additionally, thousands of scientific papers have been written about the scientific data returned by the Apollo missions. Lastly, tens of thousands of non-government and foreign reporters, journalists and photographers covered this event and no stories have ever appeared about a hoax.
Since I am not a technical person, I approached the hypothesis of the book from a different perspective. Are their facts correct? And do their arguments make sense? Typical questions asked by historical researchers. The answer to both of these questions is "NO" In some cases, they've actually lied to the reader and hidden the facts from the reader.
First of all, do their arguments make sense? No, they do not. It is inconceivable that the hundreds and thousands of engineers and scientists who worked on the project could keep silent about their government creating a moon hoax. That would imply that all these people were morally bankrupt, plus the people around the world, such as Australia and Spain, who provided technical support were also morally bankrupt. I'm sorry, I just can't believe that guilt wouldn't cause at least one person to come forward. What about the enemies of the United States? Why would they go along with this hoax? Again, it doesn't make sense.
Second, are their facts correct? Again, the answer is No. Here I'll give some specific examples. On pages 319 - 321, there is a story of an Australian women named Una Ronald who stayed up late to watch the Apollo 11 moon landing and said she saw a Coke bottle roll across the lunar surface and that the next day there were letters in her local newspaper that confirmed her story. The problem with this story is that it was nighttime in the United States and daytime in Australia when the moon landings occurred. Ask any US citizen over 45 and they will probably tell you that they stayed up late to watch the moon landings. Of course this can be easily verified by numerous space websites. The second problem with this story is that it doesn't make sense. It was estimated that a billion people watched the Apollo 11 moon landings live and only Una Roland saw a Coke bottle. This implies that somehow only Una Ronald could see a Coke bottle, during a time warp I guess, and the rest of the world is blind.
By far the most flagrant deceptions occur in the author's discussions about photographs. They make some incorrect statements that light from the sun should produce parallel shadows. First, sunlight from the sun does not travel in parallel rays, it expands slightly. Second, as any art or photography student knows and I suspect most people know as well, objects and their shadows vanish to a point. This is known as perspective. If you didn't see this in the NASA photographs, then you'd know it was fake.
To emphasis this flawed point, on page 22, the authors show two photographs of some scenery with several trees and their shadows in each photograph. The authors superimpose two parallel lines on each of the these photographs; however, when I draw a straight line on the shadows cast by the trees, they were not parallel, as they should be. The author's lines are only there to deceive the reader and not allow the reader to draw their own conclusion.
Another example of the author's deceptive ways occur on the next page, page 23. Here, there is a black and white photograph taken on the moon that shows an astronaut and the moon lander in the background and some rocks in the foreground. The authors again draw some lines to try and convince the reader that NASA is pulling off a hoax. For this case, they use a poor quality black and white photograph instead of the original color photograph. Going to a NASA site and reviewing a high resolution color scan, it is clear that the shadows indeed fall the way they should to a vanishing point and that missing shadows from several rocks and the astronaut appear.
From my perspective as a history major, these people are neither researchers, investigative reporters nor whatever they choose to call themselves, but the new snake-oil salesmen of our age.

Skepticism About the External World, by Panayot Butchvarov

Do we know or even have evidence that external material objects exist? Drawing powerfully on techniques from both analytic and continental philosophy, Butchvarov offers a strikingly original approach to this perennial issue. He argues that only a direct realist view of perception--the view that in perception we are directly aware of material objects--has any hope of providing a compelling response to the skeptic.

The seemingly insuperable problem for direct realism has always been to explain hallucination, dreaming, and other situations where the object of awareness is not a really existing physical object. This has led many philosophers to adopt views in which perceptual consciousness involves a subjective state that is the direct object of awareness. Butchvarov argues persuasively that all such views are helpless in the face of the skeptic's arguments. His radical innovation is to insist that the direct object of perceptual and even dreaming and hallucinatory experience is usually a material object, but not necessarily one that actually exists. This leads to a sophisticated metaphysics in which reality is ultimately constructed by human decisions out of objects that are ontologically more basic but which cannot be said in themselves to be either real or unreal.

Butchvarov's ingenious approach to a longstanding philosophical issue, as well as the extensive range of his references to traditional and contemporary discussions of the topic, makes Skepticism about the External World a thrilling and essential book for philosophers and philosophically minded readers.

THE MOST CONCISE ILLUMINATION YET OF THE WAR BEING WAGED ON HUMAN CONSCIOUSNESS
By Michael Eddy
If you are at all honest with yourself, and have even a modicum of intelligence, you must be aware that television is one of the most powerful tools ever devised as a means to direct thought and opinion on a grand scale. One would be hard-pressed to come up with a convincing contrary argument. Once we have accepted this, it should go without saying that it is indeed being employed for this very purpose. Most people nowadays seem to accept that there is something truly corrupt lurking in the corridors of power, but they generally seem(in my experience) unwilling to accept the extent to which this malevolent power wields its influence in their lives. I, for one, am suspicious of virtually all media programming. If it is made readily available to the public, it is very probably serving to solidify a shared perception of reality which serves the interests of those who control media distribution. As we plunge deeper into the "Information Age", it becomes of vital importance that we do not simply succumb to the wonders of the rapidly expanding media landscape. In THE NEURONOMICON, Frater Animi Imperio .'. O .'. exposes, directly and concisely(in just 32 pages!) really everything one needs to know about this escalating process. Significantly, he provides a list of mind control technology patents-the very existence of which ought to be enough to make anyone question even(or especially)the most banal facets of day-to-existence in our society. THE NEURONOMICON stands unequalled as a primer for those still unaware of the extent to which their view of reality has been and continues to be shaped, and as a call to arms to all. Reclaim your own thoughts and feelings! Don't play into their hands, and don't buy what they are selling. If we all stop believing it, IT WILL VANISH!

The cutting edge of modern magic
By Paige Turner
In a culture saturated with mind control from TV advertising to secret PsyOp warfare this book is invaluable. Lean how to control your own mind and activate psychic abilities. Particularly useful is the information on brainwave frequencies in relation to Quabalah and magical entities. I also bought Liber Theta and Liber Manteia by the same author and they sit together very well. Excellent.
