good text for world geography

I bought this text for a world geography course, and I have to say it's actually a pretty good text. I especially like the online website that goes along with this text. It has a lot of helps to learn the information like flashcards and multiple choice practice questions. There was an interactive map for each section that also quizzed you on the countries, states, and even the physical features of each area. The text itself is well organized, and each chapter is divided into subchapters that focus on each region. This text is a great choice if you want to learn about world geography.

Good textbook

I'm still in the process of reading this textbook, but overall it seems very well organized. The chapters are divided into 'realms' and each chapter then divided into two sections, the first is a quick history of the realm and the second is about each country in its respective realm. Easy reading, though there seemed to be a few....egotistical phrases in the introduction (e.g. something along the lines of the USA is the most formidable country in the world).

Very inspiring book. My wife had this book recommended to her and after reading it recommended it to me. As I was reading it, I kept thinking that it reminded me of another book I had read called "the Energy Bus."(in a good) Sure enough, it was the same author.

This is a great book and an easy read in that it is a great narrative that literally begs you to keep turning pages (digital they may be....Kindle Version.) I love it when I feel good after reading a book, and this book made me feel motivated and driven to not only have success, but do it for the right reasons and in the right way. I can truly say you will not be disappointed with this book. I recommend it for both people in business as well as anyone reading it for personal reasons.

The Carpenter's message is timeless, poignant and enduring. It's simple, love-serve-care lesson, is as basic as it gets, but when you come right down to it, that's really all there is to a 'flourishing life'. This book is for anyone at any stage of their life or career and I highly recommend it. Some might say it's too simple or 'Pollyannaish', but, my response to them is, 'you are very likely too smart for your own good, so believe that at your own peril'. Again, excellent, quick read for all.

Despite the spooky title and cover art, this is not a collection of Gothic ghost stories or fireside tales. These accounts of pre-modern beliefs (spanning the late Middle Ages to the late 17th century) employ serious scholarship. Oldridge contends that examining the so-called "strange" beliefs of the past can help us achieve a richer understanding of history. "If we can begin to understand why a French judge warned people about demonically possessed apples in 1602," he writes, "we might start to unravel the intellectual context in which he lived." But more importantly, Oldridge hopes that grasping the context of these beliefs will encourage readers to take a critical look at their own preconceived ideas. If the book suffers from anything, it is an intellectual earnestness and over-seriousness most evident in Oldridge’s constant insistence that the majority of the people he writes about were acting with "good intentions." For example, in a chapter on the rationale behind the execution of heretics in Medieval times, Oldridge notes that "the pious desire to retrieve souls from damnation could, of course, conceal more worldly motives for suppressing dissent, but it would be unduly cynical to assume this was normally the case." In moments like this, it seems that Oldridge’s single-minded adherence to his thesis—that "bizarre" past behavior and beliefs are entirely rational when taken in context—blinds him to the instances when people may very well have had impure motivations. That said, this is still a fascinating historical study that encourages self-reflection.

A smart, fun book with an excellent (if surprising) point

Here we have a fun, fascinating, and insightful book which starts out strong -- but which REALLY hits its stride and makes its point in the final two chapters. From witches and werewolves to demons and walking corpses, this is an illuminating romp into the medieval worldview.

So what exactly is Oldridge's point in writing this book? Simply this: The people of the medieval and Renaissance worlds were not ignorant, superstitious, irrational, bestial, or stupid. They had the same brains and intelligence that we have. Their actions and beliefs, far from being irrational, were perfectly sensible given their worldview. Furthermore, we are no better: The modern West has plenty of irrational beliefs and habits of our own!

Thought-provoking, honest, and exceedingly readable, Oldridge has produced a work which educates, entertains, and gently rattles about our assumptions of our own superiority. I highly recommend this book.

Fascinating look at beliefs of the past

This book explains clearly and convincingly why the people of the medieval and early modern periods believed in things that seem to us biazarre and irrational. If you want to understand why people believed in witchcraft,werewolves, the persecution of heretics, the trying of animals for crimes against humans etc, this book explains it all. It clearly shows that the beliefs of past times were no more irrational than our own, given the way people knew the world to be. If you read this book you can understand why, for instance,in 1545 it seemed reasonable to the townsfolk of Saint-Julien-de-Maurienne in France to sue a plague of flies for destroying a vinyard.

More disconcertingly, the book also shows that our own modern beliefs are often no more rational than the beliefs of the past, and that for instance the same reasons that led people to accept the truth of confessions of witchcraft, led people in modern times to accept the reality of Satanic abuse. If you pride yourself on being more rational than folk in past times, your opinion may be shaken by this book. The book is written in a lucid, witty style that makes it pleasantly easy to read for the unscholarly (like me), and should be enjoyed by anyone with an interest in history and why people believe what they do.

An Eye-Opening Scholarly Work

This book puts into perspective the way we modern humans think about the world. In pre-modern times, educated people thought very seriously about such things that today most of us would consider absurd, e.g.., werewolves, witches, walking dead, etc. Also, in those olden times, people thought rather differently about God, angels, saints, demons, demonic possessions and the devil than most of us do today. Intelligent, educated thinkers of pre-modern times had a way of looking at things that may seem strange to us yet were perfectly in line with their times. The logical arguments that they used to address their contemporary problems had common sense structure - only their starting assumptions were vastly different from those we would use today. One can only guess at what humans living, say, a thousand years from now will think about our own ways of viewing the world. Through discussing specific cases and quoting contemporary writers, the author of this excellent book does a commendable job of illustrating the above. This book is hard to put down and I heartily recommend it.

Not As Good As The Mind's Eye -- But What Is?

I must preface this by admitting that I am a Wheel of Time collector: Hardcovers, paperbacks, British editions, young adult editions, you name it. I even thought that The World of the Wheel of Time was great, despite the horrific character artwork. So for me to give this five stars might not be as weighty as a New York Times Book Review, but I will at least explain in my attempt to help guide people in whether or not they should spend their $ for this.

If you're not a Wheel of Time fan, you should pick up the "regular" book first (that would be The Eye of the World). It's not that you'd be lost if you read this -- the story is pretty easy to pick up (the graphic novel covers the first 147 pages of the paperback, plus the prologue and also the "Ravens" prologue seen in the YA edition). It's just that I don't think it would mean as much.

To fans of WOT -- which is probably most of you -- I would say grab it, with one caveat. The characters and places will often not look as they do in your head, possibly to your lessened enjoyment. But how can they? People even disagreed with Robert Jordan on how to pronounce some character names, so how can we agree on how Rand al'Thor is supposed to look? But that's where I got some of my enjoyment. Even though I've still never seen a satisfactory Trolloc, it's worth it to see other people's interpretations of RJ's work, even if it might disagree with mine.

Having said that, what about specifics? Following the basic character descriptions in the books, they get them right. They have their basic traits; of course, if they were going to do this project at all, they had *better*. Rand is tall and has red hair, Nynaeve has her braid, and Moiraine wears blue (although sometimes I have trouble telling Mat and Perrin apart). But even more: Cenn Buie looks just as old and cranky as he should, Lews Therin looks sad and demented at the same time, and I happen to think that Thom's coat looks perfect.

I don't always agree with the artists' choices. Sometimes the late-teen Egwene looks younger than her 9-year-old self, and I wish they would've drawn a Draghkar up close. But like I said, the mind's eye. My housemate, a WOTfreak too, didn't like how some of the background faces were half-drawn, but that didn't bother me.

There are bonus materials that might help you decide: a cover gallery that includes a full-page portrait of the 13 Forsaken (they're not labeled, which is kind of annoying as Mesaana and Moghedien look almost identical), and bonus character sketches, including some for people not even in this book (Min, Loial), giving hope that there will be more to come.

If nothing else, you'll get your money's worth if you read it, share it with another WOTmaniac, and spend awhile arguing about it.

My rating: 5 out of 5 (and yes, I'll buy a British edition if they slap a different cover on it)

Good, enjoyable, follows correctly the book, good graphics.

I love the WOT saga and this comic (the vol 1) seems a good representation in graphics and content. It's entertaining, has suspense, follows the book and shows most of the twists ;) However, I recommend to read the full book when you can ;) Comics and books always will present different depts of the history. And this history deserves a full dive ;) I can't wait to read the second volume. Enjoy!

Great start to an epic series

FIrst off I want to start by saying that I'm new to graphic novels but this particular read has made me happy that I have got into them. I love fantasy novels and am a big time Ice & Fire fan by George RR Martin so "The Eye of the World" stood out to me. I have not read any of the Wheel of Time novels to compare the two but I can say that both the story and illustrations are amazing.

If you're someone that loves both fantasy and comics than this is a can't miss as far as I'm concerned. I just ordered Vol. 2 in the series and can't wait to start that.

Only complaint I have is that when I ordered the book the last 15-20 pages at the top were all damaged. As a collector I was very upset about this as I like to have my books/novels in perfect condition.
