About the Author
Todd Thies is a Clinical and forensic psychologist. He received his B.A. in psychology from UCLA and his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology in Fresno, California. He conducted research on psychoactive substance use at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Fresno. He has published research on the psychological factors determining psychoactive substance use and preference. He has worked in several prisons and state hospitals. He has been in private practice in California since 1998, specializing in sexually violent predators and the assessment of dangerousness. He has spent over a dozen years training current and future psychologists, and provides regular workshops for the public on protecting children from sexual predators. He is frequently interviewed on radio and television, and in newspapers, regarding his work with sex offenders and other violent criminals. He has consulted on the movies Red Dragon and Instinct, and interviewed such notable serial killers as Charles Manson and Juan Carona. He lives in southern California.

Kratom

i want to focus on Todd's chapter on Kratom. I believe being a 9 year more than daily user makes me pretty close to an expert on kratom. don't take those anecdotal stories in this book to heart. they are all wrong. every one of those people OVER dosed on kratom. if you have visual disturbances, cross-eyed effects, nausea, vomiting, tiredness, apathy which i heard in all the stories those are each one and all together signs of not knowing your body in relation to your kratom dose and you took TOO MUCH. kratom should relieve your pain, calm you, it will NOT feel like you took vicodin or heroin or percocet so don't look for that. it will give your mood a little boost. it will make you feel like you can work harder and with a better attitude. so when your day is dragging, your back is hurting, take the RIGHT dose and 30 min later, no pain, and suddenly you can get through the rest of your day as if it was the now the start of the day. it RE energizes. it RE invigorates. unfortunatly if you take it like i do you will become physcially addicted. and that is so bad. SOOOO bad. i can't get off it. i tried once for 6 weeks and the pain and torture i went through never let up. so hopefully it stays legal. i have TERRIBLE leg pain no one can figure out. and it works. i would NEVER take a "real" narcotic. plus! if you take kratom and then try to take a "real" narcotic it BLOCKS the narcotic from working. questions email 1spunkitty@gmail.com

Good Overview

It's a nice overview of legal highs. Although you can find this information fairly easily on the internet. It does provide an excellent list to start with if you're new to the subject, although thanks to Amazon's "Look Inside" feature you can see the list without actually buying the book. I would also recommend it because these aren't your wussy "herbal weed" legal highs but drugs that would be banned if the politics were different.
Also, I'm not sure what N. Comparato (another reviewer) was talking about, but everything listed in this book is legal. Sure there's items like San Pedro cactus and Salvia that are in a bit of a legal grey area, but that comes with the territory.

Gread resource and read.

Very good resource book, even as a non-smoker, though supporter I enjoy information of all kinds, and have been using liquid kratom for a few months since finding it at a shop. It is fantastic for my acute chronic back and hip pain, in place of my doctors refusal to prescribe anything, like that there is a section on kratom. Thank you.
