Not Other "Get Over it" Book

The best books on depression are written by one who has been there! Florence has been there (just wait until you read her amazing story..) but she was determined to not stay there.
With practical advice, but also sympathy about the true effects of depression, Florence will lead you through ways to gain control of your emotions that want to weigh you down. I recommend this book frequently to people who live with chronic illness and also deal with the issues of depression.

Huffing and puffing and determined to blow 'em away

There are seasons in each of our lives, and this summer was my wet monsoon. I have a tendency to get gloomy and depressed when too many worries start to pile up - the trouble with living vicariously through everyone around you. I hate gloomy, depressing people, so when I saw this title I snacked it up.

If you just want someone to crawl into bed with you and understand, she understands, and she brings a hot cup of tea and warm hug with her. Her humor will perk you up. Her compassion will give you comfort. She is a good friend. Give her a read.

unexpected humor dealing with one of life's great challenges

This is a humorous, methodical book of unexpected challenges. Ms. Littauer presents her life expectations and self improvement as she goes about dealing with extremely sensitive and challenging events in her life. She works herself, and us, over as she lets us in on her vision for herself, her future and her family. She cleverly leads us along and one wonders why the title, "blow the dark clouds of depression away". I expected someone to relate to my depression and my family experience. Here she is poking fun at herself and life and then Boom...the unthinkable happens to her. I loved this book.

Oswald Spengler was born in 1880 at Blankenburg, Germany. He studied mathematics, philosophy, and history at Munich and Berlin. Except for his doctor's thesis on Heraclitus, he published nothing before the first volume of The Decline of the West, which appeared when he was thirty-eight. The Agadir crisis of 1911 provided the immediate incentive for his exhaustive investigations of the background and origins of our civilization. He chose his main title in 1912, finished the first draft of "Form and Actuality" ("Gestalt und Wirklichkeit") two years later, and published the volume in 1918. The second, extensively revised edition, from which the present translation was made, appeared in 1923. The concluding volume, "Perspectives of World-History" ("Welthistorische Perspektiven"), was published in 1922. The Decline of the West was first published in this country in 1906 (Vol. I) and 1928 (Vol. II).

For many years Spengler lived quietly in his home in Munich. thinking, writing, and pursuing his hobbies - the collecting of pictures and primitive weapons, listening to Beethoven quartets, reading the comedies of Shakespeare and Moliere, and taking occasional trips to the Harz Mountains and to Italy. He died suddenly of a heart attack in Munich three weeks before his fifty-sixth birthday.

My ass.

It's just a photocopy of an older text put on printer paper. Truly, it's the same paper that you use in your printer at home.
Sorry for the horrible picture quality, but you can see the lines along the edge of the pages from where the book was misaligned with the scanner. Disappointing. I guess I expected something a little more grand, this felt like the antithesis of grand. The least they could have done was touch it up a bit.

This is a sort of bare bones product that could have been made start to finish by interns. Look elsewhere.

I've been curious about the ideas of Spengler for years, and have read excerpts and commentary online like anyone else. Buying his book turned out to be harder than I expected, so I decided to go with this abridged version since I've also heard that the real thing can be repetitive and hard to understand at points. I have probably read more material online from the actual books than is included in this abridgment. There are 57 pages of large print and there's an apparent two paragraph limit per page at that. The front cover is a blow-up of a low-res jpeg - which works just fine as a thumbnail on Amazon but is angry-making to look at in hand. Adult coloring books are more substantial.

Another under-rated somewhat forgotten work of genius...

If you love Nietzsche, read Spengler, too. As a nonspecialist consumer of philosophy who doesn't have to keep up with the fads of the moment, I'd say that Spengler is a top shelf philosopher. This isn't tedious metaphysics. This is a fascinating analysis of culture in its many forms. Perhaps the most fascinating character is "Faustian man," or we ourselves for whom such "zoomed out" view is natural if not inevitable. I won't try to summarize this book, because it's real genius is in the details. And these details are insights into the meanings of and relationships between the highest works of music, philosophy, mathematics, architecture, etc. Spengler is something like an ideal guide through some of history's highlights. Agreeing here or there is beside the point. He leaves you inspired, more sensitive to subtleties all around you. His personality is serene, lofty, "cool." For me this was a nice complement to Nietzsche's tone, and it helped me "place" or process the genius of Nietzsche.

About the Author
Father Andreas Konanos was born in Munich in 1970. He comes from Ioannina, lived in Munich and from 1977 in Athens. He finished high school in the classical High School and studied Theology in Athens. Blessed Archbishop Christodoulos ordained him deacon in 1999 and Elder Archimandrite in 2000. He took over the parish of student meetings, vigils, speeches and lectures at parents' schools and spiritual centres of the Archdiocese of Athens. In 2006 he began the broadcast "Unseen Crossings" at the Radio Station Church of Piraeus. This broadcast led to invitations to speak in many cities in Greece, Cyprus and America. His contact with Jerusalem, Mount Athos and Elders inside and outside Mount Athos are a source of strength in his life.

This book comprises a complilation of radio talks that Fr. Andreas gave several years ago. It addresses several everyday problems (as described in the phone calls and letters that listeners would send to him) and he tries in a very simple way to help people with these problems. How is God helping me when I get no help? Why do I feel so lonely? Why is my life so miserable. Could it be that it's my fault and not God's? Where does God stand in my life? Fr. Andreas uses a very direct and simple way to talk to you, as if he was addressing you personally. A book to read more than once.

If you have to use Hillman's casebook, you're going to NEED this book.

To my surprise, this book made infinitely more sense than Hillman's "Contract and Related Obligation." I initially passed on it because I thought it would be equally terrible, but I was wrong and I wish I had bought this at the beginning of the year. This covers most of the cases with helpful explanations of the topics. Maybe it was more of a problem with the professor we had, but I wouldn't have survived contracts without this book. It's not long, but it's clear and concise. This was the best "hornbook" I used. If your professor is using Hillman's text, just go ahead and buy this.

This book is fantastic! Explains everything really well. Got this for first year law school and I would keep this to study/review for the bar instead of the textbook. I wish I bought it sooner to read along with the text instead of the review for finals.

Social Justice and Islam confounds many prevalent prejudices about both Sayyid Qutb and Islam. The book, written after Qutb's sojourn in the United States, contains a sharp critique of sexual harassment and the commodification of women. The book explores the political implications of the Muslim practice of zakat. Zakat is ordinarily viewed as a form of charity, a type of alms for the poor. Qutb argues that zakat, properly understood, provides a means for rectifying the imbalances and momentary instabilities of the market while preserving private property and commerce; enables the protection and just distribution of common goods, and provides both principles and practices that secure social welfare without breeding dependency or diminishing human dignity. The most illuminating aspect of the book is the recognition of the importance of human dignity to economic justice and political order. Qutb is of interest not only to Muslims but to anyone interested in political economy.

Needs a new editor

I find it very difficult to give this anything other than 5 stars, as I have found all of Zed's work to be immensely helpful. This book, taken with the beta website and the companion videos, is probably one of the best and quickest crash courses in C available. This book is the quick-and-dirty, yet somehow very clean, way to get you programming in C in an expedited fashion.

However, the one glaring problem with this book is the editing. There are exercises in the book where the program examples have been updated from the beta website, yet the program output examples have been left the same. Added on top of that, some parts of the text will talk about the book version of the program, while others will reference the website version. It's as if whoever was responsible for editing the book got halfway through and then decided to take an early vacation.

I was able to get through with very little problem because I had already used the website extensively before purchasing the book, but I can imagine that this would pose some difficulty for someone new to the language. This urgently needs a reediting and a second edition to iron out the flaws.

Despite the three stars, I still strongly recommend this book, but only when taken along with the videos and the beta website, and only if the reader is willing to take the extra time to go back and forth between the three. I would only ask Zed to take another pass at making the the solid, standalone, programming book that it obviously has the potential to be.

Good exercises, poor explanations

First, a disclosure: I was mailed a free copy of this book by the publisher.

I have very mixed feelings about this book. As a bit of background on me, I am a CS student who worked through most of K.N. King's "C Programming: A Modern Approach" last year as my formal introduction to both C and programming in general. So I'm not a total beginner at C, but I'm certainly not an expert, by any means.

Let me start with the good points about this book:

+ You will be exposed to a lot of code. And not just "textbook" code where everything is reduced and condensed to show off some facet of programming (e.g. "class Cat extends Animal"), but real code, the kind of thing you might see in an actual C project on Github. You will have to work through the code and understand what it does with relatively little handholding.

+ You will be exposed to a lot of data structures. Linked lists of several varieties, databases, structures, search trees, hash maps, and more are all used in various exercises.

+ You will gain insight from a very experienced programmer--the author! It's clear from reading this book that Zed Shaw has a lot of experience writing C professionally. He has a lot of pointers (heh) on writing code.

+ The videos are very good. There's an included DVD with lectures related to each exercise. They add a lot to the value of the book.

+ You will be exposed to other useful ideas: testing, defensive programming, etc. These are useful no matter what language you're writing in.

Now, the bad points:

- Poor copy editing. One example: in the writeup of exercise 17, in the "how to break it" section Zed writes, "For example, remove the check on line 160..." In the code, line 160 is a blank line.

- Vague, incomplete, or totally missing explanations. This was the worst part of the book in my opinion. If you're the kind of person who likes to more or less completely understand how some feature or mechanism of a programming language works before using it yourself, you may find this book frustrating. I was often referring back to K.N. King's book to review things that Zed Shaw was introducing in his code and then explaining in one or two sentences, if at all. Sometimes I was reading entire chapters of K.N. King's book before being able to dive back in to Learn C the Hard Way. You may often finding yourself searching online for definitions of standard library or other functions to get an idea of how they're fitting into the code examples. Which makes me wonder, if I have to read another textbook to understand Learn C the Hard Way, why don't I just stick with that other textbook?

Here's one example off the top of my head. Mr. Shaw says of the "register" keyword: "Forces the compiler to keep this variable in a register, and the compiler can just ignore you." Isn't that self-contradictory? How can the compiler ignore something it is "forced" to do? K.N. King's explanation was longer but much more explanatory, including the sentence: "Specifying the storage class of a variable to be register is a request, not a command. The compiler is free to store a register variable in memory if it chooses." Mr. Shaw's use of the word "force" is misleading and sloppy, and his explanation confused more than clarified.

If the example code in the exercises had had a few more pages of explanation each, I could probably have really enjoyed this book. As it is, I found it tedious, as I was spending most of my time with other sources just to understand what was written. For most concepts, I couldn't understand Mr. Shaw's super terse explanations until I had already understood some other source's explanations of that concept.

So, would I recommend this book? Well, it depends. If you don't anything about C, then I'd suggest K.N. King's C book, which is much more thorough and precise with explanations. If you have already studied C, then this might be useful as a review.

[resolved] Missing important accompanying material.

Interesting concept. I am a big fan of Zed Shaw's Learn Python the Hard Way. It's a great method that fits well with how I like to learn.

So I purchased the Kindle version of the "Learn C the Hard Way". But right of the start the author emphasises the importance of "accompanying videos" which are integral to the book, and they are nowhere to be found.

There is a section in later chapters of the book with a procedure on how to get the videos but after registering and following the procedure on the Informit website the book links to, I did not get a download link.

I opened a support ticket with Informit and 2 days later got a response with a suggestion I contact Amazon. Pretty poor experience if you ask me.

I just needed a quick refresher since I hadn't used C in some years, so I opted for a different book instead due to the issues of missing accompanying material of this book.

EDIT**: The curse of the "early adopter" strikes back! Read the comment bellow this review. It's from the editor herself. They remedied the issue and now I'm a happy camper! Highly recommend this book. Zed Shaw's method is unique and a very fun way to learn.

About the Author
Rebecca McLennan is associate professor of history at the University of California, Berkeley. Her research focuses on America since 1607, with an emphasis on post-revolutionary U.S. legal, political, and cultural history. She received her PhD from Columbia University and was on the faculty of Harvard University before joining Berkeley's history department. She has taught a diverse range of undergraduate courses, including classes on American and global foodways and agriculture since 1491; modern consumer culture; land, law, and property; and crime and punishment from colonial times to the present. Rebecca has published widely in American history and is currently writing a cultural history of courts in the early republic. Her most recent book, The Crisis of Imprisonment: Protest, Politics, and the Making of the American Penal State, 1776-1941 (Cambridge University Press, 2008), won several major book awards, including the American Historical Association's Littleton-Griswold Prize for best book in U.S. legal history.

Non-traditional and beautiful.

The inclusion of social and cultural history make this book an examination of U.S. history, from the beginnings
up to tomorrow, going beyond and behind presidential elections, political decisions, wars, and constitutional decisions. It will be of use to college students and to general readers who want the "whole story". It would be especially useful
to foreign students who have come to study here.

Comprehensive and fascinating

For anyone looking for a thoroughly comprehensive and absorbing history of the United States Becoming America is absolutely the book for you! It systematically catalogues a full history of the country, from early origins through to present day - as you would expect from this type of book - but it does so with fascinating illustrations and a fresh perspective.
