She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Urban League's Cecil E. Newman Humanitarian Award, and holds an honorary degree from St. Cloud State University.

Nellie Stone Johnson is a major force in Minnesota and national politics. In this lucid oral history from Brauer, the Minnesota correspondent for Newsweek and the Chicago Tribune, she modestly reflects on her campaign during most of the 20th-century to improve educational and job opportunities and health care. Johnson recounts her prosperous farm beginnings with a father who organized other farmers in the face of corporate greed, racism and regionalism. One of eight children, she explains the credo of her clan, which refused to be rigidly defined simply by being African-American, as evidenced by her father's involvement in progressive and New Deal politics (largely defined by white, Southern Democrats) at a time when most African-Americans still voted for the party of Lincoln. Influenced by her father's activism, Johnson later became a union organizer, enduring two failed marriages that fell victim to her single-minded devotion to her work. She commends FDR's administration for the commitment to end federal discrimination, but openly admits that racism played a major role in her own decision not to run for Congress. After her union pals ousted her from office because of her left-wing leanings, she became a seamstress while retaining an abiding interest in politics. Age did little to slow her down as she swapped ideas with Thurgood Marshall, served a long stint with the Democratic National Committee from 1979 to 1988, toured Africa and battled with white feminists over the inclusion of women of color in the ERA fight. Brauer skillfully conveys the story of an inspiring and noble woman, still active in her 90s, who has made every minute of her life count.

A social activist, labor organizer, "third-generation feminist," Johnson has devoted her entire life to political change. Now 95 years old, she is still busy, dictating her life story. Raised by farming parents who valued education, hard work, and equal rights, she was an activist from the day she learned to speak. She brought on change by organizing labor unions in the days when being affiliated with unions was dangerous. After unions were accepted in work environments, she was free to pursue more public activities, such as politics. Although she did not graduate from college, she is a lifelong learner and holds an honorary degree from St. Cloud (Minnesota) State University. Because the book is presented as an oral history, and Johnson has a tendency to ramble, it could use a bit of editing for organization, but on the whole, it is a fascinating look into the life of a powerful, energetic woman. Many readers of WOLA and NOLA will recognize Tim Fattig as a long time contributor to the Western history and Earpiana field. Tim has long been recognized for his top quality research and analytical skills. The long awaited release of his "Wyatt Earp: The Biography" will be pleasant news to his fans and readers of Earpiana.
This reviewer had the opportunity of reviewing the galley copy before it's release date scheduled for March 2003. Not surprisingly, Tim Fattig has chosen to follow in the footsteps of Stuart N. Lake and Water Noble Burns in lionizing Wyatt B. S. Earp. Though not a simple re-telling of the genre, the strength of this tome is the fluid prose, peripheral research into some of the characters that surround Wyatt Earp, and his masterful job of investigating and following up much of the previously unpublished information and personalities that effected Wyatt's story. While debunking many of the myths surrounding Wyatt's story, he has at times carried many to the forefront.
Though most of the biography is well researched and written, there are a few areas of controversy nonetheless. Many will be intriged by his assessment of the famed gunfight in Fremont Street known as the "Gunfight at the OK Corral" and his belief that Wyatt may have come back from Colorado in 1882 to hunt down and kill Johnny Ringo. Tim also possibly has Wyatt killing Pete Spence (AKA E. Lark Ferguson) when Pete actually passed away quietly from pneumonia at his home in Gila County, Arizona on January 31, 1914.
In a few cases the narrative is short and the all inclusive information included in the paragraph for brevity sake can be misconstrued by the reader. For example, in one paragraph he has almost 40 posse members riding to Charleston with Wyatt in search of Virgil's attempted murderers, when in fact, there were three separate posses (four if you want to include J. H. Jackson's two posses with two separate bench warrants) under Charles Bartholomew, J. H. Jackson and the Earp federal posse.
This reviewer would have liked to have seen Tim expand his coverage of Wyatt's controversial time in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho, Alaska and California. Maybe he will do these in subsequent volumns or articles. Despite some minor concerns, Tim Fattig has done a tremendous job with the source material and the book is readable. This book deserves a place in every reader's library of the Old West, especially those interested in Earpiana, Tombstone and Cochise County. This book is highly recommended.

Excellent book written by an excellent writer!

I bought this book at the full price of $59.95 at the Bird Cage Theatre in Tombstone, AZ. This book is worth every penny, regardless of what price you get it for! It's a beautifully crafted book from the inset picture of Wyatt Earp to the "leather" cover to the many illustrations and photos.

This book is much bigger than what I usually have time to read, not to mention I don't have the best vision in the world. Tim, the author, whom I've met in Tombstone, made a conscious decision to have the print made larger in this book than what is standard. For me, that made a big difference! No headaches! I found that once I started this book, I had a hard time putting it down.

I've been a Tombstone regular visitor for several years (since 1981), and Wyatt Earp became my hero at the age of 8. Even though he was not perfect, he's about as close as you got in those days.

It's a fascinating story of a man's life, and I think Tim did a great job with his research. His bibliography is enormous, and when talking to him, he can go on at great length far beyond what is in the book, which tells me he really knows his stuff!

I hope this review helps you make a decision to buy this great book, and perhaps even visit Tombstone, "The Town Too Tough To Die."

Very good book

I used this book as a reference for my anatomy and physiology class in college and found it be right on target. I like the way the author explains these sometimes hard to understand topics. However, the book was not boring. If you want to really get an "A" buy the following books which are sold on amazon:
Anatomy and Physiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations Vol 1(ISBN: 0971999619) and
Vol 2 (ISBN: 0971999627). These books focus on the type of questions that A and P teachers ask on college exams. My study group and I used this and it helped us all get excellent grades.

Amazingly for a book on such a subject, this easy to read and beautiful to look at text is a joy! It is very clearly laid out with content outlines at the beginning of each section and revision guides at the end. It may not be the most in-depth work on anatomy and physiology but it is certainly one of the most accessible. If you want a thorough introduction to the subject and you want to feel inspired to learn more, buy this book!

Carlsson-Paige, a professor of early childhood education and conflict resolution at Lesley University and consultant for several PBS television shows, has a lot of practical advice for parents who want to build better—nonviolent, caring, creative—relationships with their children. Children don't need electronic gizmos and brainy software, she maintains; they do need lots of creative play opportunities, a strong sense of personal security and positive relationships with other children and adults. Carlsson-Paige encourages parents to model problem solving and cooperative behavior for their children. Thus, parents shouldn't use power over their kids (issuing orders, calling time-outs), but instead try power sharing, getting on the same side of a problem with the kids and figuring out a resolution together. Parents should stop buying pre-scripted media-based toys (Power Rangers, Nemo spinoffs) and instead buy open-ended toys like blocks and modeling clay that allow children to expand their creativity. There is not much new here, and Carlsson-Paige is often preaching to the choir, but readers will want to believe in her argument that compassionate parenting will produce a less violent and more humane world. The Journey of Childhood

As a parent and former teacher, I was drawn to Nancy Carlsson-Paige's new book because I have been familiar with her groundbreaking work on young children's war play, "The War Play Dilemma" and know that she has been working, quietly and not so quietly, to effect change in the way we raise our children in this culture. She is a strong advocate for the kind of childhood I have been trying to provide for my own children, but I find it increasingly difficult to find kindred spirits who limit "screen time" and allow for plenty of "down time" for their kids. Nancy's book gives me hope that we can rescue creative play and advocate for its importance to healthy development, build closer connections to our children, help them develop the kind of empathy the world needs, and teach them to "talk back to consumerism." Most of all, it helps me feel that it's not just me against the corporations--that we parents can support each other as we try to hang on to childhood for our children--and it reminds us that childhood is not a race, but a journey....Every parent, grandparent, caregiver, and teacher needs a copy of this book!

A really good book...with a lot of errors.

This review is for CMOS Projects and Experiments Fun with the 4093IC by Newton C. Braga. I have the 339pg edition from 1999 and the cover is as pictured.

This is a hard review to write because I have split feelings about this book. It's a good book with a few big problems. Before writing this review I read the entire book and built about half the circuits in it. If it was possible I would have given it 3-1/2 stars.

The Table of Contents is available in the preview as so I will not duplicate it here. It lists all 135 projects in this book so it is worth reading.

As you would suspect the book starts off with an in depth explanation of the 4093IC and the basic circuit building blocks that will be used throughout the book. As of Aug 2015 the 4093IC is still readily available and very inexpensive.

Then the book moves right into the projects, the fast flow is good and gets you building circuits by page 31. Each project is given a brief but accurate description of how the circuit functions as well as a schematic. Breadboard layouts are not provided so the reader must be of the skill level to read basic schematics and build breadboard versions from them. This may be the most important sentence in my review, if you can't build basic circuits from a schematic you will be totally lost.

While there are 135 projects in the book you will find many are very redundant so the actual number of ideas is far less. An example of this is you may use the same basic logic to drive a piezo speaker, a speaker via a 2N2222, and a larger speaker via a TIP31. The circuit will be identical or almost identical with just the output stage changed, so this makes for three projects.

This said, I was not disappointed with the variety of projects in the book. It is a good representation of the versatility of the 4093IC and the things that can be done with it. In a way this repetition is good because it spells out exactly how to use that particular circuit in several ways, but in a way it is bad because the repetition makes the book less interesting.

I have to say I was very disappointed in the sheer number or errors, typos, the broken schematics. At a glance things look good but when you start to actually build the circuits you discover a lot of errors.

To give you an idea of the errors and omissions that are common through the whole book I will include a few examples. On page 24 the arrow head is missing from inside the transistor. On page 32 C1 is labeled .022 to .047 but neglects to say if it's pF, nF, or uF. On page 111 R2 is listed as a different value in the parts list then in the schematic. On page 120 it states the project beeps and flashes but it doesn't contain a speaker. On page 131 the TIP120 is labeled TIP11S. On page 139 C1 is listed on the parts list but there is no C1 in the schematic. And this is just a few, there are many, many, more.

So given the number of errors I can't recommend this book to beginners as it will probably just frustrate them. If you have a little experience most the errors are pretty obvious and it's not too hard to figure out how to get things to work.

Moving on. Given the age of the book many of the projects are getting dated. No surprise, about half the projects in the lamp and LED section are for lamps. Lamps are rarely used in modern hobby electronics. In almost all cases a 12V LED (or Led + resistor) can be substituted for the incandescent lamp. If you feel the need for the actual lamps I found the one for a 2002-2010 Chevy Trailblazer speedometer back light from works well. It's small, bright, vibration resistant, good to 12v, and it's leads are breadboard friendly. And it can be bought on Amazon at the same time as this book, search for the AISN B012FS6LLG or B00RZ4YRS0.

To my surprise many of the circuits contain high voltages so many projects in this book aren't appropriate for children unless they have proper supervision. Many of the these high voltage projects, like a relay driven light, can be easily modified to work with lower voltages. But others like a high voltage florescent lamp driver can not be made safer because by their nature they are high voltage.

As not to dwell on the negative too much I need to say I actually enjoyed this book. The author tried hard to take a single IC and do a lot of fun things with it, and for the most part he succeeded. The circuits are so simple the errors an omissions didn't make for a bad experience, more like slight puzzle. And while some things in the book are a little dated, anyone looking for a book on a 4000 series IC probably isn't looking for cutting edge technology.

Now a word on price; I know reviews are supposed to avoid this subject because it changes, but when it comes down to it price is one of the big factors in buying a book, especially a older one like this this. I paid $30 for this book (used) and after reading it I would say that is worth about half what I paid. Now, if there was a Second Edition with the most errors corrected I would happily pay $30 or more for that and would rate it at 5 stars.

This book is now available on Kindle; I ask if anyone reads the Kindle version to please leave a comment as to if the Kindle version contains a lot of errors.

Good Reading

Although the book does contain some typos and mismatched schematics with text the author does a fine job of introducing the 4093 and progresses logically to circuits of increased function or complexity. The beginning chaptors provide an intro and methods of interface to other devices. Some of the bistable circuits were difficult to get working reliably but an overall well authored book and referance. I would purchase it again.

Well worth the price

This book was recommended to me by a co-worker to help understand the course material. While it wasn't the course textbook it did contain all of the course topics. It provided numerous examples and clear discussions.
I recommend that any student interested in custom analog or digital IC design get it. I would also say, from my colleagues input, that it is also a very good reference book.
In summary, it was well worth the price!

Best place to start reading about Pinhole Cameras

This book is a great place to start if you're interested in Pinhole Photography. The author writes enthusiastically and unpretentiously about the subject and his energy and commitment comes across in abundance. I'm a Pinhole Photographer myself and this book has really rejuvenated my interest in making my own cameras.

A New Life

Mamie Goes Seaside is an easy to read book that is written in a way that is light and funny even as it deals with some pretty heavy issues: love, divorce, children, stepchildren, friendship, murder, illness and death. I really enjoyed reading how Mamie, a 50 year old woman with children gets the courage to leave her lifeless marriage to find how life would be unencumbered by these people. The story is filled with interesting characters and adventures that guide Mamie on her way. I definitely recommend this well written book.

Easy read who-done-it, strong consistent characterizations. Typical Michal Poe intellectual playfulness. Unfortunately due to the death of this beautiful author, Michael Poe books are a limited supply. I will have everyone.

The main characters in Mamie Goes Seaside made me laugh out loud. The practical and matter-of-fact way that Mamie and her friend deal with many unpleasant issues kept me entertained throughout.
