It's What's Below That Counts
By Steven Sean Casteel
In "Subterranean Worlds Inside Earth," author Timothy Green Beckley has collected many stories from a vast wealth of sources on the subject of what is often called "The Inner Earth Theory." The theory holds that the Earth does not consist of molten metal at its core, as modern science tells us, but is instead quite hollow inside, and supports several different races of sentient beings as well as their impressive underground cities. Those cities are said to be linked to one another by underground tunnels with aboveground openings that the occasional surface-dwelling mortal stumbles on to.
Much of the information Beckley presents comes from a man named Richard Shaver, a spot welder on the Detroit automobile assembly lines who one day began to hear strange voices projected at him as he went about his work. Following the trail that began with that unearthly auditory experience, Shaver eventually came to the conclusion that the voices were coming from somewhere beneath the Earth, from a race of creatures he came to call the "Deros," which is short for "degenerate robots."
The Deros have a story of their own. They were once a gentle race who lived on the surface of the Earth, until it became apparent that the sun was being transformed in some way that caused an increase in the amount of a form of dangerous radiation contained in its rays. Some of the Deros escaped the planet by going into space in their highly-developed spacecraft, but not all of them managed to do so.
Those forced to remain went underground and built the cities referred to above, but the sun's poisonous radiation also caused them to go insane and to develop cruel and sadistic personality traits. It is because of their evil madness that mankind suffers so much today, and Shaver himself experienced some bizarre mistreatments as he sought to learn more about the mysterious Deros. Shaver eventually published many of his Dero tales in a magazine called "Amazing Stories," which were so popular that they greatly increased the magazine's circulation.
But Shaver's story of the Deros is only one of many versions of exactly what is down there in the Hollow Earth. Beckley also offers stories by journalist John J. Robinson and others whose research has turned up different legends and personal experiences, some of which tell of a hidden paradise below our feet where beautiful, spiritually benevolent creatures reside.
Beckley's use of numerous and divergent reports helps to paint a wonderfully complete picture of the centuries of folklore that have become mingled with scientific fact through real-world investigations into the "Subterranean Worlds Inside Earth." Some of what's here stretches credibility a little more than might be totally comfortable. But if you have an appetite for unsolved mysteries that extend beyond the realm of the safe and the knowable, then Beckley's thorough overview of what may be inside the Hollow Earth is well worth the time spent reading it.

IMPRESSIVE COLLECTION OF STORIES
By A Customer
I once met the author at a conference a number of years ago. I understand he has been a student of the paranormal since he was very young. He told me he was raised in a house that was haunted and had an out of body experience early in life. He had his first UFO sighting at the age of l0. He did a column called ON THE TRAIL OF THE FLYING SAUCERS for Ray Palmer's magazine and he used to correspond with Richard Shaver who claimed that he had been in the caves and been attacked by the dero. Its all very strange. Beckley tells it best in this book. There are literally dozens of stories about individuals who have met the inner earth dwellers. Its easy to read -- Beckley has a breezy style of writing. Its exciting and will keep you turning the page.

Sprawling, Difficult to Follow, Not Reader Friendly
By TheRaccoonMan
Timothy Beckley is a long time "expert" on UFOs, etc. In this book he focuses-insofar as he's willing to focus on anything-the myth of the Hollow Earth. I would assume that most people checking out a review of Tim's are familiar with the Hollow Earth theory. This is Fringe territory with a capital F. If you believe that it is feasible that the earth is hollow, then you probably will find little here that you haven't picked up at a thousand other sources-the interior of our planet is home to the giants who propel the UFOs people report. It also has a sun that floats in air and provides the light that the giants-or whoever they are-so that they can do whatever it is that they do. There's a lot of nonsense about underground tunnels in Malta, the Amazonian rain forest, the Himalayas, etc. and no look at the Hollow Earth would be would be complete without a chapter or three's worth of material about Richard Shaver. Mr. Shaver was a mentally ill drifter who frankly admits that he routinely heard voices in his head, sent a giant manuscript to Amazing Stories at a time when editor Ray Palmer was at the helm (Mr. Palmer is a fascinating character who screams out for a biography-he was more interesting than anything Shaver wrote.) As a sort bet, Palmer retrieved the manuscript from the trash and, after heavy editing, published it. Shaver's story seemed to touch a nerve with science fiction fans and sales skyrocketed. The "Shaver Controversy" became huge, and therefore Palmer couldn't very well admit that Shaver was insane and the voices he heard were simply symptoms of his illness. Therefore, to the best of my knowledge, Palmer always maintained that Shaver was a gifted writer who should be taken seriously-he went so far as to claim that he heard multiple voices coming from a Shaver's room when he was positive Shaver was alone. This book is valuable because it includes an interview with Shaver and some of his writings. It's difficult to recommend this book to a
reader unfamiliar with the whole mythic superstructure which gathered around the subject of UFOs. This book is more for intermediate saucer buffs who aren't very critical and who have a lot of patience-I had to make several attempts to actually finish the book. So, buyer beware!!

Polemics, by Alain Badiou

Polemics is a series of brilliant metapolitical reflections, demolishing established opinion and dominant propaganda, and reorienting our understanding of events from the Kosovo and Iraq wars to the Paris Commune and the Cultural Revolution. At once witty and profound, Badiou presents a series of radical philosophical engagements with politics, and questions what constitutes political truth.

Review
“A thinker of tremendously invigorating moral fervour, able to rise to Swiftian scorn or fine Cocteau-like flourishes....Badiou’s passionate belief in human autonomy is inspiring”—Daily Telegraph

“Scarcely any other moral thinker of our day is as politically clear-sighted and courageously polemical, so prepared to put notions of truth and universality back on the agenda.”—Terry Eagleton

“In Polemics, there are withering critiques and witty demolitions of the so-called war on terror, the invasion of Iraq, the bombardment of Serbia and the pantomime of parliamentary democracy ... There is a delightful Swiftian satire on the Islamic headscarf affair and a denunciation of the racism that led to the riots in the banlieues late in 2005.”—Simon Critchley, London Review of Books

“Shaking the foundations of Western liberal democracy.”—Times Higher Education Supplement

“[Badiou’s] argumentative vigour is undeniable. There is a terrific excoriation of the French burka ban as symptomatic of the enforced display of women, a trenchant series of investigations into “Uses of the Word ‘Jew’”, and a “Manifesto of Affirmationist Art” that is a welcome anecdote to lazy anti-modernism.”—Steven Poole, Guardian

An amazing work but nothing particularlly new
By D. Pool
This is a great read--less heavy handed than Being and Event while still striking deep at core issues. It is also much shorter and easier to digest than some of Badiou's other works. I read this for a political philosophy class and really enjoyed it for its ability to get everyone talking.

This makes for a great companion to his other works but does reuse some ideas that he has already stated. For me it was what hooked me on Badiou.

Political Philosophy politically engaged
By German Reader
Alain Badiou has published on the epistemic foundation of an event and presents himself in this book not so much as a philosopher of modal logic and set theory but as an intellectual in the tradition of Critical Theory. "Polemics" shows his engagement in down-to-earth-politics and the philosophical background he comes from is always present in his analyses. It is a joy to read theses essays. They are dense and precise in analysis.

Review

"The range of articles and diversity of authors included offer an intellectual strength. This book presents competing perspectives, which encourage student independence in developing ideas and responses. The book incorporates a broad range of racial groups rather than focusing solely on African Americans and Latinos/as. The inclusion of white people as a racial group opens students to the realization that all racial groups--those in the minority and the majority--are socially constructed."--Molly Merryman, Kent State University

Lies lies and more lies
By Amazon Customer
Although this book is full of intentional lies it is in fact quite dangerous to those doing the lying. Because most of what they talk about is not only common knowledge but well documented. The book invites readers to look this stuff up. And what will they find when they look these things up? The first thing are all the lies. They are not exactly subtle. But far more important than the lies are all the victims. Rape....robbery....murder....vicious assault.....worse. These are not victimless crimes. And there is an overwhelming racial component and a strong homosexual element as well. Perhaps the most damning about the latter has to do with homosexuality and pedophilia.

By dangerous, I mean, that were the truth of these things widespread, the inevitable result would be a genocidal civil war. The behavior involved is ground for it....more justification than any way actually waged has ever had. The lies spoken about it are outrageous that cannot stand in any society. And won't for long.

Initial reaction to a book like this will be anger and righteous outrage. But it is inevitable that one learn the truth about these things. They quite literally can't stand up to even casual observation. The more you learn, the more that outrage changes in focus.

Interzones: Black/White Sex Districts in Chicago and New York in the Early Twentieth Century, by Kevin Mumford

Interzones is an innovative account of how the color line was drawn--and how it was crossed--in twentieth-century American cities. Kevin Mumford chronicles the role of vice districts in New York and Chicago as crucibles for the shaping of racial categories and racial inequalities.

Focusing on Chicago's South Side and Levee districts, and Greenwich Village and Harlem in New York at the height of the Progressive era, Mumford traces the connections between the Great Migration, the commercialization of leisure, and the politics of reform and urban renewal. Interzones is the first book to examine in depth the combined effects on American culture of two major transformations: the migration north of southern blacks and the emergence of a new public consumer culture.

Mumford writes an important chapter in Progressive-era history from the perspectives of its most marginalized and dispossessed citizens. Recreating the mixed-race underworlds of brothels and dance halls, and charting the history of a black-white sexual subculture, Mumford shows how fluid race relations were in these "interzones." From Jack Johnson and the "white slavery" scare of the 1910's to the growth of a vital gay subculture and the phenomenon of white slumming, he explores in provocative detail the connections between political reforms and public culture, racial prejudice and sexual taboo, the hardening of the color line and the geography of modern inner cities.

The complicated links between race and sex, and reform and reaction, are vividly displayed in Mumford's look at a singular moment in the settling of American culture and society.

Review

An interesting addition to the ever-growing list of works dealing with questions of race and ethnicity.

(Anna Notaro, University of Nottingham American Studies (UK))

Mumford argues that the United States is unique in its historical anxiety about and regulation of black / white sex. Fears of 'miscegenation'played hidden but determinant roles in shaping racial and gender identities at the beginning of the twentieth century....This racialization of sex... generated a new urban landscape. 'Interzones'were the black / white sex districts... located in neighborhoods with inhabitants who were black and white, heterosexual and homosexual, prostitute and customer... Interzones represents a significant and critical foray into the perplexities of the urban interracial universe.

Review

A first-of-its-kind scholarly exploration of race and racism, and the explosive power of black/white cross-racial sexuality. Focusing on marginal groups in Chicago and New York in the early years of the twentieth century, Interzones engages the idea that black/white sexuality frequently extends beyond the interpersonal into the realm of the political. In clear and sometimes compelling prose that probes deeply into the complexities of its subject, this book is a must-read for everyone interested in the dynamics of race and sex in America.

(Nellie McKay, author of Jean Toomer, Artist: A Study of His Literary Life and Work)

1920s: Miscegenation as Vice???
By Jeffery Mingo
Nowadays, most of us would assume some (and I stress, some) people may turn up their noses to interracial couplings or encourage their children not to partake of it, Little would most of us realize that the government and various police departments were actively engaged in keeping people of different races from getting sexually or romantically involved with each other. Well, just like now, the couple that reaps the greatest wrath is that of a black man and a white woman. Here, Dr. Mumford shows that in the 1920s, demarcated areas of large cities became places where the races mixed surreptitiously, just as others would drink alcohol during Prohibition or engage in any other stigmatized practice.

I enjoyed hearing of my hometown of Chicago in the same breath as New York City. Usually, academics focus on the latter and forget the former. This book was a breath of fresh air which reminded me that there was a long period when Chi-Town was the Second City. Dr. Mumford states that other cities, such as Cleveland and Detroit, had interzones. Graduate students in those localities may want to use this book to write their own specific research in this area.

Even though this book covers sexual activities, it is far from sexy and that will disappoint many. This text does not give juicy accounts of people from 100 years ago talking about their own interracial sex lives. Instead, it is filled with quotes from police investigators discussing this activity. If you got a kick out of seeing the film "Mandingo" or reading about Malcolm Little's exploits "across the color line," you will find nothing that titillating here.

Dr. Mumford asserts that anti-vice advocates suppressed white prostitution and thus prostitution became a whiteman-blackwoman activity. This is not surprising since this sexual coupling was common before the Emancipation Proclamation. However, there are many racist people that would not hold company with blacks. Dr. Mumford suggests that white clients were more than happy to contract black prostitutes, but I imagine that in the pre-Civil Rights era, many clients would have said, "If I can't get a white woman, then I don't want anybody at all." Dr. Mumford mentions that the Cotton Club had black entertainers and white audiences, but refused to allow black audiences inside. I wonder if the same dynamic happened in these interzones. Did white men go to brothels in black neighborhoods, but still in pursuit of white sex workers?

Dr. Mumford actually discuss venues where Asian men danced with white women before talking of black-white couplings. Thus, he breaks the black-white binary that many Latino and Asian academics lament. However, he never mentions whether these brideless Asian men could have or tried to connect with African-American women. Other academics have noted that in California Asian Indian men married Mexicanas when their were no Asian women around to marry. Did the same thing happen in Chicago and NYC? Why does the author ignore the potential dynamic between groups of color?

Dr. Mumford states that he is biracial and wants this book to be a source of strength for other biracial persons in America. While an admirable goal, I highly doubt this book would make biracial readers happy because it says nothing about happy mixed couples raising children with positive identities in a supportive community. This book was all about authorities trying to break up mixed couples and mixed couples usually getting together for X-rated activities or failing to be allowed to marry. While we grow from learning the tragedies of the past, reading of that past can be a bitter pill to swallow.

Dr. Mumford includes a chapter on gay dynamics in these interzones. Gay studies enthusiasts may really want to peep this chapter. Dr. Mumford cites John D'Emilio, Jeffrey Weeks, and other gay studies experts. It truly shows how their founding work has influenced many aspects of the study of sexuality. Still, I found the gay chapter to be a bit cluttered.

The back cover states that Dr. Mumford is an independent scholar who lives in Madison, Wisconsin. Any college should jump at the chance to hire this author, especially UW at Madison, given it lack of racial diversity and its controversies surrounding it. They would be foolish not to hire him for a tenure-track position immediately. In fact, any college in or around New York City or Chicago would greatly benefit by having such a rigorous and promising scholar in their history department. A guy this sharp who can write a book this strong should not be just floating out in the wind.

Dr. Mumford's book mostly move chronologically, then, near the end of the book, he mentions "Birth of a Nation," a film made in 1915, not the Roaring Twenties. This non-linear move doesn't make sense. I also thought the conclusory chapter was irrelevant. Dr. Mumford moves from police reports to theater to more police reports to a film. This vacillating between life and art may bother some readers, especially hardcore historians. However, since I think art influences life and culture heavily, I did not have a problem with it.
