Excellent Highway Design Reference

This is an in depth reference for every aspect of horizontal and vertical geometry. Contains base theory, then all of the necessary equations for calculating sight distances, vertical curve lengths, horizontal and vertical curve obstructions. Some of the values used should be cross-referenced with values from the AASHTO Green Book, as some of the design values in the book may be out of date. Also discusses spiral curves, compund curves, unsymmetrical vertical curves. There are equations, detail narratives, and example problems in this book, that I have not seen in any other manual. An excellent companion to your Green Book, CERM, and HCM.

This book is an excellent reference if you are performing any type of engineering or surveying work that involves spiral or vertical curves. Though it is an older book, the collection of formulas is unsurpassed. Just ignore the pictures of '57 Chevys cruising down the highways. :)

Dog fights at 300k feet

The author is well-versed in his subject with very technical explanations which fit well into his story. The novel is older, but although dated, kept me enthralled to the end. The old Russia vs. U.S. is there, but with a new adversary which requires their close cooperation to defeat. Makes me want to research and learn more about the possibilities of intra-orbital flight, both military and commercial. The characters were very realistic - both good guys and bad guys.

Everything you could want in a thrilling aerospace war novel. Action cover-to-cover, including combat both in flight and in DC. Rich character development and perfectly written.

Suborbital experimental planes ran into opposition they did not expect...

Black Sky is about a joint US Russia program to develop ultra-high flying sub-orbital craft (higher and faster than the vaunted SR-71) and how it ran into a mysterious opponent, who seem to be present whenever there is a satellite or payload launch malfunction. While the writing and flying is great, the plot seem to plod along slowly, as the opponents have been shown early, albeit separate from each other and you know they are going to collide, rather than presented as a mystery from one side's view only. There's some additional plot points about spies, intrigue, bungling bureaucracy, and so on that doesn't add too much to the plot, IMHO, of course. Reads a bit like slower paced version of a Dale Brown novel.

Recommended if you like the subject and his previous books. Not a must-read though.

Good story but need to address the strange lack of intimacy between adults who are supposed to be madly in love

I have liked this series but the author's reluctance to address the romantic nature of the two main relationships in the books is starting to become distracting. It's no longer romantic tension---it's eroding the believability of the story itself. It's fine to keep things relatively "clean" but the almost total absence of any intimacy beyond hand holding, hugs, and an occassional kiss is simply unrealistic without some sort of explanation. These are 4 adults--one of whom is supposed to be a noted playboy. I was relieved this latest book FINALLY touched on this topic (I've been wondering if Tyler might be gay). Unfortunately the issue was reduced to passing, vague comments about being "responsible". The author doesn't need to write detailed erotica -- but some more realistic portrayal of the romantic Iives of contemporary 20-somethings who have been dating for over a year would make this tale stronger simply b/c it currently stands out as plot point with no clear rationale.
