Wonderful guide

I bought this guide hoping to learn more about the Bagan temples. stupas and pagodas I'd seen on a recent trip to Myanmar (Burma). This guide totally delivers what a traveler needs with descriptions, maps, and photos of the period styles and "best of" temples and stupas one might be lucky enough to see in this area of more than 2000 structures. Best of all, it's digital so it's easy to load and carry along when visiting this magical site. Yes, I'm planning to return come winter with the guide and flashlight. I had no idea guides like this were available.

Wonderful Guide to a Magical Place!

I used this Kindle book on my iPad when touring Bagan in January 2013. It has enough information in 3 to 6 pages per temple/shrine to help the visitor appreciate the temple, without being overwhelmed. An outstanding diagram of the temple/shrine layout and photographs, both exterior and interior shots, further aid the reader. 21 temples/shrines are described, and 13 of them are starred as the most important. We went to 10 of the starred ones, and the recommendations were outstanding. This is a "must have" guide when visiting this magical place.

No trip to Bagan could be complete without this!

This was a very readable and detailed introduction to many of the temples of Bagan, including some of the smaller ones. As an independent traveler I found it very useful to carry with me on my visit to them as it provided background information (history, architecture, building technique), floor plans, photos, descriptions of sculptures, glazed tiles and paintings and tips for visitors. All this provided a good framework for understanding each stupa, temple or decorative feature. For me it was an invaluable guide and I think that understanding the significance of each site made the visit even more special.

Poorly written and unhelpful

This book consists mainly of definitions with very little explanatory prose. As such, it is not very useful for didactic purposes and would only be of questionable value as a reference book.

Most chapters are a few pages long and are accompanied with extensive, needlessly wordy introductions. For example, a subheading may say "Distinctions Among Fixed, Variable, and Semivariable Costs". The next paragraph reads, "This chapter emphasizes the distinctions among fixed, variable, and semivariable costs because this knowledge is a basic working tool in financial management. The manager needs to know the difference between fixed and variable costs to compute contribution margins and break-even points. The manager also needs to know about semivariable costs to make good decisions about how to treat these costs." As you can see, this text is not really explanatory and simply repeats over and over again the importance of the material it purports to teach.

Explanatory figures sometimes include arrows and boxes connecting different parts of a diagram. These were assembled without care and several figures have multiple arrows drawn so closely together that it is impossible to follow them from their head to tail. Instead, they merely serve to clutter the already low-yield figure.

I could not advise anyone to purchase this book.

It pretty much has crosswords and matching

Chapters are small and topics are simple. The book is realy for people who are going to have little to do with the financial end of running a practice. It provides a general overview so a manager can have general idea of what's going in that department. The accompanying dvd does little to enhance understanding. It pretty much has crosswords and matching.

About the Author

An Epic of the Journeys of the Soul

The Ice Woman. That's what her partners at Schroeder, Wilkes and Barron call Marianna Gardner. It is an appropriate sobriquet for a woman who was too busy practicing law to attend her father's funeral.

While sifting through her father's belongings, Marianna comes across a reminder of a once cherished but long-forgotten family friend. Determined to re-establish some connection with her past, she finds "Uncle Ion" in a shabby nursing home. As they rekindle their relationship, Marianna examines her life and slowly realizes that she is not fond of the person she has become. Her journey of self-discovery accelerates when she and Uncle Ion travel to Greece so that he may conclude some personal business.

Marianna's Grecian sojourn is far from peaceful. As her respect for the people around her grows, so does her disdain for her own life. Moreover, upon unearthing several old journals, Marianna uncovers startling truths about Uncle Ion's life and her own origins. Shortly before he dies, Uncle Ion unravels the mysteries of the journals and his complicated connection to Marianna. The story concludes as, armed with new insights, Marianna gathers the courage to make peace with herself, break free from the chains that bind her and build a new life.

Multi-faceted Story Lines

Marathon is one of those rare novels that becomes infused within the being of the person reading the story. It is a novel that I was unable to put down, one that I wanted to continue reading for a very long time.

Maria Anastasia's story is quite incredible; her "resurrection" is a journey filled with wisdom, and it becomes a tribute to the power of love to transform lives in mysterious and poignant ways.

While reading the novel, I found myself relishing the multi-faceted story lines that are weaved throughout the pages. The ancient past, the living past, the present, and the hopeful future are all facets of Marianna's resurrection. The stories of Pheidippides, interspersed between Ion's journals, words from The Illiad, and the story of Marianna's and Ion's lives are like the Russian matryoshka nesting dolls, with one story fitting inside of another one and so on.

Parts of the major story unfold in Greece and they read like a mystery tale; I did not anticipate the path the story would take once Marianna and Ion arrived in Ion's homeland. It is a beautiful ending for the resurrected protagonist.

Ion Theodore is a wise man, and W. William Winokur surely has the blessings of his former teacher and mentor in the words that appear on the pages in this brilliant novel. I loved every moment of this reading experience, and I will pass this book on to those I know and love.

A diamond discovery: a definite winner

William Winokur's epic adventure, "MARATHON" is a page turner that stays with you like a cherished memory. Brilliant plotting, prose and execution, with descriptive imagery that gives the read the feel of watching an Oscar-caliber movie. And speaking of Oscar-caliber movies... I see that JAMES CAMERON, director of "Titanic" has given this book a glowing endorsement on it's front cover jacket. Perhaps "MARATHON" is just the property for Cameron to follow-up his epic "TITANIC"?? Buy this book now, and hang onto the remaining FIRST EDITIONS still available before this baby takes off!!!

Dr. John Myers was raised in Lawrence, Kansas, a small "Jayhawker" town sitting in the shadow of Kansas University. After high school and three years in the army, "Dr. John's" undergraduate studies were quite diverse: basics at Bob Jones University; engineering at the University of Wisconsin; and three years of Bible study at Prairie Bible Institute in Alberta, Canada. After that, Dr. Myers earned a doctorate in Chiropractic at Palmer Chiropractic College in Davenport, Iowa.

After graduation and an extensive background in several areas of natural, non–toxic healing, Dr. Myers focused his research in the field of medical electronics. He has developed the DHSWT program (Dual–Harmonic Sound Wave Therapy), a unique bio–electronic technology with significant potential. Utilizing the DHSWT program, Dr. Myers is presently concentrating on perfecting a new approach to adult stem cell therapy. Myers' new work is significant in that it is non–invasive, completely benign, and projects the potential of an inexpensive program readily available to all who need it

John Myers has obtained recorded accounts of people on the verge of dying and written the accounts unedited. The stories are so realistic that you are brought to tears and wonder. The time covered goes almost to the time of Christ. I have read the book several times and have loaned to friends only to almost fight to get it back. I would not part with my copy for any money.

Hope of life after death

The book has been well documented and showed two different types of death--"hopeful" and "without hope". Various people gave their testimonies of both types of death. This has an important message for all of us today. There are still many skeptical of life after death. This book should help the reader to see the differences between hope and without hope. Read this book with an open mind and be willing to see the messages God wants you to understand and believe. May you receive hope (if you are searching for it) as you read Voices from the Edge of Eternity.

Simplicity & Clarity

Who better than Robert Wolfe to offer a fresh and concise expression of the Ashtavakra Gita for the modern reader who is recognizing the essential nature of the nondual reality? Robert does not just write from conceptual comprehension but rather he allows words to arise from the clarity of his own direct nondual recognition. He has a very well developed skill of presenting nondual teachings in the written word and backing them up by his own understanding and with the support of the nondual master Ramana Maharshi. This is a valuable gem for Western readers who enjoy contemplating one of the richest texts from India on the subject of nonduality. I would love to see similar work presented on The Ribhu Gita, which was quite often quoted and recommended by Ramana as a text worthy of contemplation.

Review of some ancient texts on Non-duality

Mr. Wolfe reviews three ancient texts pointing out the non-duality teachings expressed in them. These texts are the Ashtavkara Gita, The Diamond Sutra, and the Mandukya Upanishad. He also provides translations of teachings of Ramana Maharshi which relate to the materials in these ancient texts. I appreciated his presentation because sometimes I get confused by these texts and having a master pull out and explain important parts was very helpful. I recommend this book to anyone interested in non-duality or ancient texts.

"There is always only one, and that is the Self."

In "Always Only One," Robert Wolfe aims to provide "an interpretive commentary" on an Ancient Vedic text - the Ashtavakra Gita (henceforth, the Gita)- that is "not intended to be a scholarly treatment." Ashtavakra is actually the name of an enlightened character who holds a conversation with a king named Janaka throughout the Gita. Before taking this up, Wolfe outlines nonduality, starting at the heart of the matter -"a fundamental actuality" that has been given many names (e.g., God, Self, Being, Tao, Brahman, Totality, etc.) in different traditions. The Gita, too, apparently uses different names to describe it. This "fundamental actuality" (whatever it is called) is thought to transcend, precede, and exist independently of everything else; it is unconstrained by time and space, and thus is formless and without beginning or end. As in many other writings, this "fundamental actuality" can also be called the Absolute (which is Wolfe's preferred term), and is in contrast to all else that arises within it as an impermanent form, which can be called relative (or appearance). One way to think about enlightenment (which itself is given many names such as (Self-)realization, awakening, and nondual or Absolute awareness) is that it is the understanding of the inseparability of relative forms (such as one's self) and the Absolute.

In deep non-dream sleep, we are in this kind of state where there are no distinctions, e.g., between self and not-self, and yet we are still present. This is nonduality. The default state of waking life, on the other hand, is dualistic because thought is inherently divisive. However, with the realization of some fundamental facts, nondual awareness can arise and permeate daily life. Furthermore, with it comes a dissolution of self-centered concerns, a re-channelling of the energy previously required to maintain the ego into creative action, and the cessation of inner and outer conflict. This whole series of affairs -nonduality as it is known in modern Western spirituality- is the topic both of Wolfe's present and previous works.

Nonduality is difficult to communicate via language. For one, when reading spiritual texts, there is usually no easy way to identify whether any particular sentence is being spoken from the perspective of the dualistic relative self or the nondualistic Absolute Self; it may switch back and forth frequently. Wolfe notes for instance that in the Ashtavakra Gita, the two main characters use "me" or "I" but because they are both realized, this refers to the Absolute. Such clarifications shine a light onto the Gita for those who are unfamiliar with these pitfalls and want to read the original text without getting unnecessarily confused.

Second, language, being inherently dualistic, can never be sufficient to express nonduality anyway. If duality arises in the realm of thought (and hence, language), reality as experienced prior to thought should be "the truth of actuality" where "nothing exists as `objects'." Why, then, if this ultimate reality is formless is it often described as "one" (as in the title of the book)? Wolfe provides brief but lucid and potent clarifications here: This is "one, without a second." "Always Only One" is a short book (the main body is about 60 pages) focused mainly on the Gita. I cannot help but recommend "Living Nonduality," another book (indeed, a masterpiece) by Robert Wolfe, in which he demonstrates more of his special gift of talking about nonduality while avoiding much of the complications that arise through thought and language.

As Wolfe continues to talk about these and other intricacies of nonduality (e.g., the consequences of nondual awareness), he gives specific references to the Gita, down to which chapter and verse one can find the relevant material, and provides exemplary quotes, relying on Nityaswarupananda's translation.

In later sections of the book, Wolfe touches upon a couple of ancient texts that are similar to the Gita -the Mandukya Upanishad and the Diamond Sutra. Then, arriving at the present era, he introduces Ramana Maharshi, a 20th century Indian sage. The final section is compiled from "Talks with Sri Ramana Maharshi." The quotes are well-chosen and they read "as if Ramana were... Ashtavakra replying to Janaka's initial question," with one brief clarification inserted by Wolfe. Upon finishing the book, it is easy (and reassuring) to notice the consistent nature of nondual teachings across these ancient and modern sources. The Self-realized speak the same clear (notwithstanding the potential for confusion inevitably introduced by the dualistic nature of language), coherent, direct, and simple language. Robert Wolfe himself bears the same torch of nonduality and masterfully continues this tradition in the Western world today. "Always Only One" reads wonderfully as a serious yet brief and uncomplicated introduction to nonduality and to the command Wolfe has over the topic as an author himself. For the reader who is more familiar with nonduality, the book is just as valuable as an elegantly written affirmation of the fact that "There is always only one, and that is the Self."
